In the Inspiration thread I mentioned that a collaboration might be a good idea. And the more I thought about it the more I thought about how it could really accomplish a few tasks. So to take things a little further down that path I have a few questions for you Pods out there.

    1. If the musical genre fit your style would you be interested in participating?
    2. If there was enough interest do you think several styles of music could be covered (i.e. more than one collab)?
    3. Do you think exposing a project like this for public use is a good idea? (my thoughts are that a downloadable complete project might be a great source for first time Podium users and newbies across the board)
    4. Frits, do you think that this would be a value added thing, once done, to make available here? (obviously)

I have a broad range of ideas to throw at the organization of such a thing but its all moot if there is no interest. So, whaddya think? Willing to share some of that talent, wherever & whatever it might be, with the rest of us?

Chime in if you think this is a not so good idea as well.

    Thanks
    Derrick

I like the idea of contributing to the music of other Podium users. But how would you manage to deal with huge download sizes of 32 Bit Wav files?

In order to establish a “Podium musician base”, it would be cool, if every Podium user adds his style/instrument/etc. to the user profile or signature.

But when collaborating, I think Podium’s lack of more bread and butter plugins makes it difficult, to create a “decent” sounding project, that can be loaded and played back instantly..

    But to answer your questions:

    1. –> yes
    2. –> yes, since there are so many styles
    3. –> the VIP-Lounge seems to be a good place; it would be only accessable to Podium users

Well, if we get a few more responses, at least 4 or 5, I think we can work through the other details. I think your suggestion of moving this to the VIP Lounge is a good idea as well.

Maybe once the initial group is gathered we can chime in and vote on which plugs we’ll use.

And initially maybe we could pass around mp3’s until we flesh out the tune(s), using wav’s later for the final mix. I may be able (very probable) to help with the online storage issue.

I think it is a good idea.

When I created the zynewave.com wiki area, project collaboration was one of the things I thought it could be used for. Although, I seem to remember that the wiki had a limit on the size of files that could be uploaded, so this will be a problem with large wav files. Otherwise, I should be able to open up for public ftp access to zynewave.com. I have tons of unused storage space, so there will be no limits there.

Hmm, if this thing gets off the ground, I could implement features in Podium that will allow you to browse collaboration projects online and download/upload updated project and sound files etc. 🙂

I concur, ’tis a good initiative.

    In answer:

    1. yes
    2. yes
    3. yes

I suggest we limit to 24bit files to keep it manageable and work within a CC Creative Commons licensing model.

Frits, would it be possible to move this thread into the VIP Lounge or should we just start a new one?

Also, the idea of browsing collabs is neat. I think in a collab environment it would also be nice if one could export a group track with all the settings for the plugs and automation intact. Maybe without the ins and outs mapped because that would change user-to-user.

As well, just in case it doesn’t work out on Frits’ end, I checked on my end and I have 2gb that I can donate to this type of endeavor. And there are no limits on bandwidth for me. Access would be via ftp as well, with the idea of moving all the final projects over to Zynewave’s server.

I do all my projects in 24bit due to most of them being used in film and video. But wouldn’t 16bit files make better use of bandwidth/storage in the long run?

I can do that easily. But I can’t see why it should be confined to the VIP lounge?

My hosting plan allows me 1500 gigs storage, and 15000 gigs traffic per month. That should be plenty of space, even for 32 bit wav files. Only reason to limit the wav files to 16/24 bit would be for people with slow internet connections.

I agree, you should host it 😀

Putting this initially in the VIP Lounge would guarantee that participating parties would have a minimum of compatibility, if sharing project/arrangements files directly from Podium. If we are just going to share wav files then I think there is a case for leaving it here. Please keep in mind that I am talking about while its getting put together.

Which leads me to my next post….

For those that want to participate my first Q would be, original or cover? I think the answer to that question will somewhat determine the level of interest.

How about a nice simple 12 bar blues as a starter? No issues/time delay composing as you just follow std blues pattern.
So we could dive right in and get it all completed quicker.
We can get more adventerous with different projects later on.

What kind of collab are folks interrested in?
A – Using each others performance abilities to record a track each towards a final piece
B – Seeing how other people would arrange (re-arrange) and mix a mostly finished track
C – Writing new tunes together.

I think writing stuff together might be difficult, although I suppose you could throw up an idea and others could rework it etc..

Also we need to bear in mind what plug-ins people are going to have. Sticking mostly to free and zynewave plugins.
Maybe electronic music would be more difficult to collaborate on than acoustic.
Although bouncing to an audio track would help here.

I’m mainly keyboards and am used to doing blues piano and organs etc. Try my hand at guitar but am frankly rubbish. My vocals are not too great (but blues is a very forgiving genre!!) Also these days finding that adding a little dash of blues harmnica is sounding pretty good.

I’d also be interrested in any other genre, I’m really looking for new stuff to try as well.

Yeah I’m interrested, how do we go about this?
If you get you podium project uploaded, I can add a few different takes and see what you think.

I have set up FTP access to zynewave.com. I think it is a good idea to reserve this service for VIP members. Another reason to purchase a Podium license, in case you’re using the CM version or the demo.

There’s a new sticky topic in the VIP Lounge that lists FTP instructions and password. Let me know if you encounter any problems, and if you have suggestions for further guidelines to the FTP access.

Since the files in the FTP site are VIP password protected, I don’t think there is any harm in discussing the collaboration projects here in the general chat forum.
