    Hi,

I am trying my new Core 2 Duo, and Podium behaves strangely.
Podium’s CPU meter always moves with spikes up tu 30 / 40 % at stop, with only an empty track in the arrangement (with no plugin).
When I play an audio file the spikes occurs too of course.

If I turn off the 2nd CPU for Podium in the task manager, the meter stays stable at 4 %.
If I turn on the 2nd and off the 1st the spikes occurs also.
In fact they occur as soon as the 2nd CPU is set on for Podium.
It occurs whenever the multicore is activated or not in Podium.

It is the same with ASIO4all driver (USB sound card) and Saffire Pro (Firewire).

The graph in the task manager doesn’t show the variation.
I have not yet worked on projects, so I don’t know if it has some effect on the overall performances.

Does anybody with a core 2 duo has seen anything like this ?

What Windows version and what ASIO latency?

It sounds to me like there is a high-priority system service that is running on the second CPU. As soon as the 2nd CPU is used by Podium (or rather the ASIO thread is running on the 2nd CPU), it will compete with this service for CPU time. Try temporarily disabling any virus checkers, spyware, etc. that you may have running.

I run WinXP SP2 and the result is the same with all buffers settings, with the two soundcards (alas, I cannot use my Multiface no more since this laptop has no Carbus !).

I have found which process is responsible, but it seems to be no mean to change it.
It is an utility which name is I8kfanGUI which allow me to control the speed of the fans (veru useful !!!).
It works on the first CPU only and it cannot be changed.
The priority is “normal” and if I change it to below it doesn’t change anything for Podium.
I have tried different settings for reding the sensors, but it has no effect on Podium.

The graph of the task manager does show Podium’s activity but it is rather low, around 7 or 8 % on one CPU only (but not always the same !).

(first half Podium is active with an empty arrangement)

I will see later if it makes a difference during real work and tell you.
Certainly not something to worry about…
