This would probably be really easy to fix, but I don’t know it is intentional for some reason:

When editing, the Ctrl key is used to both add/remove to selection AND to drag-copy the events.

Why not use different keys for these two functions? They are both frequently used in the same situation, and it’s hard to make it behave as I intend to.

For example, in Logic add/remove to selection is Shift+Ctrl and Ctrl by itself is used for drag-copying.

Shift+Ctrl is the shortcut for selecting the vertical zoom tool.

But after thinking about it, I could change the behaviour to mimic the way selection works in standard Windows lists: If you hold control while clicking a file/icon, it’s only at the release of the button that the selection is toggled (if no drag action has been started). This way you can hold control and start a copy drag action without toggling the selection. Is that the way to go?

I would think the closer it mimics the way windows works the less chance there is for confusion…

Hey, that would probably solve the confusion, Frits (can I call you by your name).

I have been playing with Podium a bit more. A few times I started out writing a question here, but then I found how I could do what I wanted.

(In case you are interested: Instantly setting MIDI in for the selected track, separately processing multiple outs from a VSTi from the same sequence, reducing clutter in Arrangement by hiding tracks.)

I still need to figure out how to have several MIDI tracks controlling the same instance of a VSTi, but I haven’t read the manual much nor looked at all the tutorials. This is possible, right?

Also, did I understand right that if I for example set up a multiout VSTi with tracks for insert FX for different outputs I can save that as a “preset” and load that part of track setup to other projects? This would help quite a lot.

The whole “from top to roots” structure is confusing at first but it probably just takes some time to get used to – and I can already see some of the benefits.

I would mainly use Podium as a MIDI sequencer with VSTi’s and FX so I am not that interested in timestretching and such. But surely you intend to add more MIDI editing options at some point after you get some more audio related stuff done? Quantising as a track property instead of fixing notes would be really nice (and would allow “auto-quantising”).

Talking about quantising, since I make mostly minimal techno I tend to quantise always after recording. I didn’t find a shortcut for “quantise inside”…

For your information, I am already pretty close to purchasing. ❗ It seems very stable and robust, so I feel I could start making music – and you seem to listen.

Sure. I won’t even complain if you should misspell my name with a z (which quite a few do )

You mean an insert instrument (and not multitimbral)? It should be doable by placing all the MIDI tracks (without any mappings assigned) as child tracks of the VSTi track.

Also, did I understand right that if I for example set up a multiout VSTi with tracks for insert FX for different outputs I can save that as a “preset” and load that part of track setup to other projects? This would help quite a lot.

I assume you are talking about the “Track template” feature. Currently these can’t be migrated to other projects. If you create an extensive set of track templates you can save it all as a project template for new projects.

But surely you intend to add more MIDI editing options at some point after you get some more audio related stuff done?

Yes. More advanced quantize options are high on the list.

Hmm, I made a child track to the VSTi, but I can’t record to it. Could you look at this picture if you can see what I am doing wrong:

Okay, I played with this a bit more and the child tracks can inded be used in playback – good!

But am I right that I can only record to the parent VSTi track? In this situation I always need to manually move the sequences down to child tracks from the parent track to make room for new recordings. (If I want to keep newly recorded stuff in separate sequences, of course. Which would be a pretty common need, I think.)

So, there is a totally unnecessary extra step in the workflow.

Is there some reason why direct recording to the child tracks couldn’t be allowed?

I understand now. You can’t record directly on the child tracks. You need to do the recording on the parent track, and then move the recorded clips to a child track, after which you can record new clips on the parent track.

Edit: I replied before seeing your latest post.

Yes, that does sound like a good idea. 😉

    Hmmm…

The best for everybody (?) : custom keys and mouse shortcuts !!! 😛

(of course, it is nice to be able to choose every color for the GUI, but personnaly I would have prefer before to be able to choose how I use my keyboard and my mouse !…)
