Hi, excited about the new beta, and have been playing with the demo….
However, there is some behavior that just seems really weird to me….
I double click on the right half of a cell and the note will appear in the cell NEXT to the one I double clicked in. The mouse cursor isn’t shown with screenshots so I had to draw on a red dot where I had the mouse cursor.
Obviously what I am suggesting is that whatever cell is double clicked inside of, that is where the note should go.
Thank you for your consideration.
I’ve seen the same behavior as well
The current behaviour snaps to the grid line closest to the clicked point. What you would prefer is that it should always snap to the grid line to the left of the clicked point. In other words, I’m trying to click grid lines, while you’re trying to click the space between grid lines. I guess there are pros and cons for both these behaviours.
The snap position is shown in the toolbar mouse cursor display field. If you turn of snapping, then you’ll see the mouse position displayed as -50% to +50% around the closest grid line. If it should work like you preferred, then this display should show the grid position left of the mouse cursor and show percentages from 0% to 100% instead.
I would like to hear other users opinion on this. If the majority of users think the snapping to grid line instead of snapping to grid space is weird, then I don’t mind changing the snap behaviour.
I don’t even see any down grid lines – how do you activate them?

What do you mean with “down grid lines”?
If you enable “snap” then the quantize grid will be drawn instead of the arrangement time-signature grid.

Tons of another host snap to grid line. Some years ago I always asked myself why this behavior, then I get comfortable left clicking in the first half of the note.
I don’t mind at all that you do that Podium snap to grid space, I like it even

Sorry I meant vertical – I can only see horizontal lines regardless of turning snap on/off

Check your zoom range. Either that or you are looking at an empty editor window that isn’t showing a sequence.
Frits, I have no issues with aiming for the snap line (vertical π ).
When I’m entering a note, any note, my first thought would be where it starts, followed by what duration it should extend for.
Put it this way, with snapping off, one wouldn’t click to add a note in an area away from wher thry actually want the note to start.
IMO Gridlines are better and the current behaviour just helps one hit’em.

No it’s not that but I’ve realised now there is no grid because the arrangement was set to linear timecode (I always tend to set it to that as I don’t usually use piano roll but record what I’m playing freely – however I hadn’t realised it would actually totally disable any sort of grid)

I’m saying that I’m neutral, I like both systems.
edit: it could be implemented as an option
I think the snap is absolutely in order as it is. It behaves just as a time snap feature should work (50% around the wanted timing, or probably rather 49% and 51%).
It would feel completely weird to me, if I clicked close to my wanted point in time and the note got dragged to the left.
IMHO the aiming for the spaces in some hosts just alienates the conception of what the grid actually stands for.
Well, its weird to me.
Cubase, Sonar, Live, Fruity Loops, EnergyXT, REAPER, and Protools all put notes in the same way. Its Podium that puts the notes in funny.
Before you say “well, whats wrong with being different”
The reason why the others do it that way is because its the simplest implementation. You see a rectangle, you double click or draw inside of it, the note is placed inside of it. Simple — What-you-see-is-what-you-get.

Hey not to worry π Could be included as an option if there were enough requests for it.
There are quite a few of these ‘options’ in Podium born from differing opinions.
