    Hi,

This is not really a Podium’s problem, but it is nevertheless very annoying when editing audio files in another app.

Some softwares like Vegas, Samplitude or Reaper can let the ASIO driver unused when they are not active, so we can edit audio files in another software without having to quit.

Since I use Podium, each time I have to edit something in SoundForge I have to quit it, otherwise I cannot play audio in SoundForge.
I know that with the RME driver I could do it if I use other outputs than in Podium, but it is not really possible for me…

Since I make this generally several times a day, you can also understand why I whish that Podium could be opened in the previous state instead of having to reopen the arrangements etc. !

So : could you add an option to “release the driver when Podium is in the background” or, perhaps easier, “when the engine is off” ?

Since editing audio files in other apps is something very common, I think that it will be valuable for Podium.

Of course, a more integrated feature like “edit in…” when we right click on an audio sequence will also be nice for a later future.

    Thanks in advance !

    +1

This is something I’d like to see, too.

I would prefer the ‘release driver when engine is off’ option.

Yes, it would be extremely useful !

I think I would definitely prefer a right click option.

Having this as a drop down option when right clicking any audio file would be very useful. I have Soundforge, Samplitude e.t.c and would very much like to use these with Podium in this way. It would make a huge difference.

Perhaps an option to add 2 or 3 applications to this drop down menu could be implemented. ACID Pro 6 has a similar option that works very well.

Frits, I am very sorry to ask one more time for this, but I am REALLY tired of having to quit Podium each time that I need to edit a file in SoundForge or simply playing a file on the desktop, and re-open the ditors, show the plugins etc.
At the end of the day, it becomes extremely painful.
So, if it is not too hard to add an option to “release the audio driver when the engine is turned off” I will be very grateful…
    Thanks ! 😳

I have to agree with acousmod which means I owe you an apology as well Frtis πŸ˜†

Seriously though it may be time now to try and allow some sort of communication or relationship between Podium and certain types of applications.

Ok Rewire is on the way, but until then? Streamboy is a clever option for now (I have streamed audio from Project 5 to Podium successfully ) but still I think it is maybe time to look at how Podium users can work with features built into Podium that cater for other applications.

Please Frits give serious consideration to at least considering the “release the audio driver when the engine is turned off” option as one of your next steps for audio features.

While it is not the same as right clicking on a clip and selecting a drop down menu of existing audio editors to choose from, to work on that clip, it will at least allow Podium to co-exist with other appplications much better. πŸ˜‰

Just being frank here…Podium cannot do everything. It would be totally silly of any of us to expect Podium to already have the tools that are available in dedicated editors like Soundforge (which I also have). I am sure eveyone here agrees with me, especially as you are only one person Frits who has done so remarkably well already!

It is also unrealistic to stop using more advanced tools elsewhere just because they are not available in Podium. πŸ˜‰

So how do we solve this problem? Trying little by little to bridge the gap between Podium and other applications that have features it simply does not have yet. Lets face it Frits we cannot possibly expect you to take on Steinberg or Cakewalk on the feature front.

They will almost always be ahead on features…they have bigger development budgets and as a result more developers available to produce more features every year than any single developer could handle inlcuding you with Podium. Being realistic here.

Where Podium differs from many products on offer at the moment IMO is the hierarchic approach, surprisingly very high levels of stability and reliablity. These are priceless attributes in the current market. 8)

You can just get work done smoothly, quickly and reliably *every time*. Quick fixes also guarantee a Podium user is never left for weeks or months without a solution to any bug found. 8)

Pretty much all of the work on Podium has been on improving it’s ‘internal’ features, I totally agree with that decision but perhaps as Podium is now mature in many areas, it may be time to look beyond internal features and make it more user friendly with other applications. πŸ˜‰

I’ve added a “Release drivers when Podium does not have focus” option in the Preferences dialog. I decided against the “driver release on power-off” option, because that would mean you could not play or preview sounds in the sound editor unless an arrangement was activated. Appearing in release 1.76.

Absolutely perfect !!! For me it is better.
    Thanks a lot Frits πŸ˜›
I think that even if it is not a visible feature, all users will benefit from it one day or another.
And like Conquistador could say (?) “it is the open door to a right click option for direct editing in another app”. Later…

Err yes I suppose I could say that πŸ˜†

Well with a response like that Frits, I think anyone reading this thread can see why smilies are frequently used in posts on this forum! πŸ™‚ Thanks! πŸ™‚

At the end of the day how many features does one need to professionally produce music? Podium has long ago gone past that point but certain types of highly useful tools and features are still found elsewhere and your implementation of “Release drivers when Podium does not have focus” option will now ease the process of working with those packages while using Podium. 8)

would you be able to put in a option to release the driver when it’s recording a bounce track?? sometimes i have 2 copies of podium open at once and after a while if one is doing a long bounce then the audio goes all crackly until i reset the midi/audio preferences for both.

oh hold on, that would be a natural consquence of simply changing window anyway so wouldnt actually be a new feature or change anyway… nice πŸ™‚

While I haven’t tried this with external sound editors, I can load up Podium, turn on monitoring. and start playback.

I can then load up iTunes and start playing a song.

I can hear both Podium and iTuns playing at the same time.

So I’m not sure I want an option that turns off the audio drivers when switching focus to another app.

The new option is disabled by default, so there is no change in behaviour unless you enable the option. I’m curious: Are you using ASIO drivers? Is Podium and iTunes playing on the same stereo out pair? Normally it is not possible for more than one application to access an ASIO driver. When I use my RME ASIO driver in Podium, mp3 playback in Media Player is muted even though it does not use ASIO drivers.

I am using a presonus Inspire and all it has is a single stereo out and headphone.

    I am using ASIO…

Get a load of this. As per my other email I tried upgrading my drivers and am having some problems with Podium right now, I’ve just has Tracktion, Itunes, Windows Media Player and Winamp playing without issue.
