I found a thread regarding Drum Maps from around May of this year but seemingly nothing newer. Is there a tutorial available (or in the works) that could maybe help out a complete newbie (me)?
I suspect some of my confusion is simply not understanding the Podium vernacular. Is there a central glossary of terms for Podium? That might help too – then again, I’m pretty thick at times đ
TIA,

I don’t have a drum map tutorial in the works, but have you checked out the drum map editor page in the guide?

Yes – but (did I mention I was thick sometimes?) …
In the manual there are multiple references to panels & presets & before long I’ve lost any sense of an “overview” of what’s really happening. I believe I see (from a distance) that there are sets of linked concepts which in some way(s) mirror and/or extend the hierarchical track engine design. I just don’t understand the linkage yet.
I’ll keep tryin’

“Panels” should refer to the input/map/preset etc. panels in the track inspector.
You could try loading the “Freebees” example project. The “Song B” uses a drum map track for the Drumatic plugin. That will at least let you test the drum map editor.

Hi PJ,
I suspect if Frits had the time he would gladly put together a more detailed drum map tutorial. The fact is, he has to juggle a high number of things as a single developer and to some degree might rely on other users sharing their knowledge on Podium (based on their usage of the Podium guide he has already written), but in much more detail.
I doubt Frits has the time to go into granular detail just yet but… I am putting together a drum map tutorial and I am 60 – 70% of the way there. I use Stylus RMX but of course the principles applied should work with any drum VSTi.
I remember ‘SuperCrunchy’ I think was/is is his Podium forum name, he put together a tutorial on getting started with Podium.
Now I had already spent plenty of time with the Podium demo before that but gave up as I just could not get a sound out of it, having used many times more complex hosts before successfully. This is over a year ago.
His tutorial just went a bit further and I finally ‘got it’. Sometimes providing even more detail on a particular area in a product is the only way to ‘get it’ so I know how you feel.
Podium is radically easier to get into now. Also the Wiki is designed to allow users to add their ideas and tutorials. So once I have completed the tutorial I will post it on the Wiki. Probably here as well as many people search the forum first.
I hope that helps. đ

I have Stylus RMX myself – I would really like to see your drum map tutorial when it is ready!
Thanks!

Hey! Another RMX user. đ Thats great. The tutorial will be ideal for you then. Although for anyone else reading this thread, if you do not use Stylus it should be very useful as well, as the steps apply to just about any drum module. đ

Looking forward to your tutorial!

Not far to go now, I have pretty much finished the text. All that is left are the images for the tutorial. I will get back to finishing that early next week. đ

I won’t hold you to this schedule but this is great news!!
thanks,

đ No worries.
A question for Frits though…
I have come across a strange problem while writing the drum map tutorial. While it is possible to use the default Program as a drum kit by right clicking and converting to a drum kit there is no way to save this Program.
It appears the only way to save a drum kit is to create a Library preset even if a default Program is already there in the preset panel for that track.
It seems a bit strange to be able to create a drum kit as a Program or Library preset but only be able to save it / export, if it is a Library preset. No options exist to save / export Programs as a drum kit or am I missing something?
A simple right click on a Library preset > Properties brings up Import / Export options. Simple.
For Programs the properties page does not allow for a user to save the drum kit. What am I missing or is it just not possible to export / save a Program as a drum kit?

You mean save/export as a .fxp or .fxb file? The VST preset file format can only store the plugin program data. The individual drum presets you create as child presets of the drumkit preset cannot be stored in VST preset files.

Yes.

Ok…I think to simplify things it would be better then for a user to start of with a Library Preset not a Program for drum kit creation as it allows for quick and easy Save / Export, correct?
When working with drum maps I simply create a Library preset with the New Program Library Preset option and work with that. Saving is easy this way.
I was curious about the Program option as it does allow a drum kit to be created but not saved / exported.

I’m not sure what you mean. If you have the tutorial done, you could publish it as it is and we can discuss things that can be improved. You could also email me your project file.

Good idea. I’m just tidying up a few things and adding some images.

Yes no problem. đ
