Hello to everybody π
I’ve been a Podium tester for a few weeks now and there is always that
one thing that bothers me most about it – the lack of MIDI streaming,
it is a – real – drawback to me.
I need to transmit arpeggio notes from VSTi down to MIDI. I know Podium
won’t allow me to do this directly, so I started looking for workarounds.
I have done a lot of forum searching and tried many things, but nothing
seems to work.
Is it possible to use an external VST host like VSTHost
(in its slave mode and Legree VST/i plugin loaded in Podium)
or TobyBear’s minihost to load the said arpeggiator and transmit resulting
MIDI data over to Podium without MIDI Yoke, or anything similar?
I really don’t want to resort back to competition’s software,
simply because I love Podium and I’m seriously considering to become a
licensee.
Cheers!
Daniel

What do you want to control with the MIDI output of the arp?
If it just needs to control another VSTi on the same chain, then I suppose there are many modular chainer plugins that can do the job. eXT comes to mind.
I want to record a plugin output straight to the track,
in this case arpeggiator’s MIDI output, so that I can then experiment
to my heart’s content with what comes out π
I wanted to avoid any heavy third party software to workaround it,
but if that’s the only way, then I probably have no choice?

That should be possible in Podium. If your Arp plugin is configured as an instrument (“Device is an instrument” option in Device Mapping properties), then if you record enable the plugin track and start recording, any MIDI notes output by the plugin should be recorded on the track.
Hmmm… I might be onto a bug then, because nothing gets recorded upon enabling record mode.
I can only hear audio coming from eXT2, but no MIDI gets recorded into that Podium track.
The version I’m using is 2.14 Demo. Odd!

Is the arp you referred to built into eXT2? In that case, are you sure that the eXT2 plugin outputs the MIDI notes from the arp?
Yes it is the built-in arpeggiator. I don’t know how to make sure it outputs MIDI from the plugin,
since I can’t insert a MIDI monitor etc. in the Podium chain.
All I know is that I can hear an arpeggio sound in the Podium track from a synth VST
that is loaded inside eXT2. But no MIDI gets recorded afterwards.
I’m not familiar with eXT2, but maybe you could ask on the eXT2 forum or check the eXT2 documentation to see if there is a way to route the MIDI output of the arp to the eXT2 plugin output. Perhaps using its modular routing feature.
Can you give me explicit instructions? I own both and could test it for you.
I’ve never tried recording MIDI from a plugin, but at least initially, I can’t get it to work?
I inserted an arpeggiator in XT2, and a sequencer (just in case XT2 was being fussy or something), and connected the MIDI out of the arp to the MIDI IN of the MIDI OUT module (sounds funny haha). Podium, when receiving a MIDI signal, usually flashes on the sidebar, but I got no flashes. I had no audio connected but I’m going to guess the MIDI wasn’t recorded. Is there another plugin I can try, or something I forgot to do to try this out for you?

That only flashes when receiving/sending via the MIDI interfaces. Not plugins.

Well, it’s kind of funny, but LiquidProj3ct reported this exact feature as a problem in the latest 2.17 release topic. He is using Poise, so I guess you could try that too π
I’m .. so out of my depth here. π³
Both XT2 and XT1 do the same thing; it plays the synth inside it, with only MIDI connected internally, but doesn’t seem to record. I setup two tracks, one which plays MIDI into XT (as it is required to get the arp to do anything of course) and one to record on, using the same “instance”. No recording… But I really wasn’t sure what I was doing.
However, I attached Nuffink’s ChordSpace just straight on a track, armed it, started recording and clicked on some chords, and voila; it recorded the MIDI.
Because I have no idea why one works and another doesn’t, I might leave this topic alone. As I said, I’m out of my depth, I’m used to working with audio chains, not MIDI. π³
Edit: Grrr… Sorry, I don’t know how to get it working either. Maybe ask the folks at the eXT forum. They’re mostly helpful when they’re not too busy slagging each other off. π
On the up-side I got Podium to record MIDI output from hypercyclic (http://www.mucoder.net/hypercyclic) fine just now.
I would like to thank everybody for contribution and effort!
Hypercyclic… how could I live without it? Superb tool!
Okay, so I have tested a few other plugins and here are the results:
Hypercyclic – Works OK.
Chordspace – Ditto.
Arpocalypse – Does not record MIDI note out, only CCs get recorded and
parameter tracks are automatically created.
Arpimedes – Ditto.
Chordator – Ditto.
Humanisator – Ditto.
Quickeys – Ditto.
eXT2 – Ditto.
Frits – if you don’t mind I can send you my test project file π
So, I have just tested eXT2 VSTi with Reaper. It works flawlessly there,
so we can assume MIDI from eXT2 is working.
