ZynewaveKeymasterAny Podium users into classical music?
I’ve joined the current group buy for GPO (only a day left to order). I’m a big fan of classical music, but I’ve never tried working with a synthesized/sampled orchestra. I’m curious to see how difficult it is to obtain realism.

duncanparsonsParticipantI had seen that, but don’t have the cash to spare, alas.
I do more in the way of trios or quartets as extra interest to a piece, tho’ had I an orchestra available, I would probably make use of it.
I do have the Squidfont and SJO orchestral soundfonts – both around 70-80Mb fonts, which are OK. They are considered to be the poor mans GPO. For free, they’re about the best you can get. Neither of them has everything right, but generally, where one lacks, the other comes through – two orchestras playing! Wasn’t it Voltaire who made quips about that?
Anyway, I hope you enjoy GPO! And I look forward to hearing the predule to Podium Opus I!

kingtubbyParticipantI read somewhere on KVR that the group-buy offer precludes UK buyers anyway – something to do with the UK distributors π . I may have been interested otherwise.

haikuParticipantI just dont have the cash right now, but it’s a very good deal. I would have joined the group buy in a heartbeat if I could afford it.
I use SampleTank2/SonikSynth2 and all the Expansion Tanks and Sonic Capsules for my sampled stuff right now. They sound pretty good and they’re very affordable.
I’m sure you’ll love GPO Frits. I never heard anyone say anything bad about it – everyone is always raving about the quality. Enjoy π

sugesParticipantI’ve been in this situation before, not necessarily to create classical music, but to employ “realistic” strings in certain productions without having to contract an orchestra.
The consensus among all the producers I know is to hire a violinist for the violin parts, and you can use sample library strings for your backup string section. Obviously this is because the violin is often the highest-mixed element in the section, and because of it’s almost impossible-to-recreate portamento which is key to the realism of a violin solo.
I’m thinking though that may not work for classical, where there is no pianos and drums and other pop elements to mask the fakeness of the backing strings.
In any case, even though I haven’t tried GPO one of the major studios here in Toronto took it back to the store and won’t use it anymore, claiming there’s stereo phasing issues with it?! I think that’s pretty odd coming from a professional package, but that’s what they said.
The movie scorers I know swear by Vienna Symphony Orchestra, I know there’s like 20 versions of that package I don’t know which is “the one”, but these are vast, vast sample libraries with hundreds of phrasings for each instrument in the various sections, so with intricate programming and sound selection (and I assume a whole lot of track freezing) you can create highly realistic orchestral scores. Another key is to make proper use of your Waves IR-1 convolution verbs, using realistic chamber impulses and individually affecting each instrument in proportion to how they would be physically arranged from the mics in a real chamber.
Finally, I’d suggest, even though I’m using a Mac now and can’t even try it, Synful Strings. I’ve been hearing serious things about this, and the demos sound pretty unbelievable: http://www.synful.com.
Cool.

Guys, Garry Garritan pointed out that there was a deal for UK people from TimeSpace. We got the full GPO for half price as GPO Advanced is on the horizon. The version UK people got also included the extra stuff that the US-Internation version didn’t.
The Timespace offer has now passed, but I notice that both Dolphin and DigitalVillage247 have now slashed the reatil price of GPO in half.

Worth looking into. I picked up GPO cheap in the UK and it’s great.

ConquistadorParticipantThanks ceenda. π
I am also now looking into GPO advanced as well and other additional libraries.

ZynewaveKeymasterHi π
Finally, after getting a new computer and implementing a few needed features, I’ve been able to do some serious work with the GPO plugin. I’ve started out with some simple stuff, namely a string orchestra piece by Edward Grieg. I’m still not 100% satisfied, but there are many things in GPO still that I can work with to improve realism.
Check out the mp3 below. Any opinions on the quality?

PodianerParticipantSounds great!! I like the middle part.. sounds powerful, because of the dynamic in the strings… Did you make that with Podium?? π
This plugin is really amazing.. I downloaded all the samples they have on their homepage. Really impressing!

That’s a rhetorical question, right? π
I’ll post the project file once I get it cleaned out a little.

Right! 8)
I’m certainly interested in the project file!

ZynewaveKeymasterI have updated the mp3 file. The previous mp3 was made using section samples. This version uses solo instruments combined into ensembles.
I have also uploaded the Podium project file, used for creating this mp3. The project has stickie notes explaining the techniques used. Find the download link below.

duncanparsonsParticipantThat’s really nice frits..
I love the dynamic range – that’s the sort of thing that Garritan should have with their demos..

Very nice and judging by the screenshot you made loads of tempo changes in the project as well. What was your track count for the project?
