i’m new on podium. I have now played podium 2.16 demo couple days. I’ve found that podium is stable and audio quality is pretty good. However i can see that it have done executing workflows burlesque 🙁
I have some features which i really miss.. So there they are!
– Now on that mixer, i dont know rly which my plugins are the first, which is second and etc.. Normally, i would think that the first one is first.. But is it? no. It is just the order which u choose them. And if i want to drag and drop to move it down, is just replace it!! this is so wrong.. Bad feature, rly! i know that there is possibility to move above those fx, but honestly, it just doesnt work good. Browsing different menus just slow’s down ur working. 🙄
– In overal, that mixer view needs improvents. Maybe add’ing that soft synth on different slot and keep those mixer slot for fx? Also you should make more clear viewing those slot you know. Example Cubase or FL Studio mixer. That kinda.
– In piano roll, i would have just one and one wish! I dont want to change those pencil and select tool again and again, it takes too much time! Now in that “selection tool” u can select all, move them. U can even draw new notes, but WHY god why, u cannot strech them? This is little thing and its affect in negative way on your producing.
– Maybe old users dont care about this, but pls give us an option to put CTRL+D to duplicate notes on pianoroll and Stuff on playlist. This makes ableton, cubase, logic etc users feeling more at home. i also miss this..
– Double click on all podium own’s slider to RESET them??? Now its CTRL+Click, but i bet many would love to have this option. It also speed up your working. U dont have to reach that shitty button all the time. You may think that u can live it ctrl+click, but in long run it’s rly start to annoying..
– This feature is also must have. i notice that sometimes i accidentaly copy notes and stuff on playlist over each other. wait a minute? This feature is bad.. You dont always see what mistakes you are doing. This feature is pretty bad IMO.. FL Studio has this same feature which sucks.. The best part coming when you have to spot your mistakes, god help me then.. So if no default, then give us option to turn that double note thing off. PLS!
– When i browsing my own samples.. Why the hell u have to double click to hear it? Pls change it to just one click. Its much faster browsing style.
– Also, why there isn’t button to move back? i have to always first chose my favorite.. Boring..
– Midi clips on playlist, when i strech it, how about it “autodraw” those notes? Like in ableton, check out. Its cool and fast. Speed up your working.
– Where is SWING??!?!?!? Come on.. All the other dawn’s are global swing and different groves. This is what makes your music a life.
– And the last one, but the most wanted! Give us EASY SIDECHAIN!!! Same like in ableton? Its so damn easy. Just couple click and voilá!
Okay, these are most wanted, and if i can see these features, ill promise to buy podium.. And i bet many many others too. These are the podium “weakest” links now. Imo.
This isnt so importat, but it would be a good choise. That playlist, or mixer. I want to open it new window. The space where u produce your music its so damn small. Maybe playlist to different windows would be hard to code (take some time), but mixer. I think mixer would be nice in own window. Reason 4 is good example where playlist is it in different window, and its working damn good.
Sorry for my bad english, and if there is some of these features, pls let me know. Like i said, i’m new on podium! ps. I’m ready to take beta testing if needed 😉
Edit; Autoreseting those meter values would be nice too 🙂 those peak levels.. really annoying to reset them manually.

That’s a lot of stuff there, so I’m only going to reply to things I might help, or don’t agree with. Mind you, I’m just a (happy) user. You’ll most likely get official answers from Zynewave, too. 😉

It works like this because of Podium’s hierarchic track concept, one of the things that make it unique. It’s unlikely to change all of a sudden, and I for one am very happy with it. The only exception is copying effects by drag-and-drop instead of moving them – that’s been discussed and is on the future plan, I believe.

ALT-click and drag left/right to resize notes or up/down to adjust velocity.

I don’t know if custom keyboard shortcuts are still on the future plan. Just use the INSERT key for this, mind though that it works on just one event at a time as it is right now. I myself have suggested it should work on multiple events!

I like the way it is, as I often enter values directly and when you double-click a slider, the appropriate text entry field is selected automatically. Plus I wouldn’t want a sudden loudness burst because I clicked a volume slider two times by accident! That’s just my preference of course. 🙂

Maybe you missed it or I misunderstood, but there’s a menu entry to help with that: Edit -> Select Overlapping.

You can move up to any folder by clicking its name in the address bar. For example, if you’re in “C:AudioSamplesClaps” click on “Audio” and you’re there.

Well, with Podium, you have pretty much a single-window concept. You can have the mixer in a floating window, but that’s just a workaround and not recommended, I think. If you mean having the arrangement and mixer on different pages, however, like in Ableton Live, that’s quite possible. And of course you could always set up Podium to use two seperate screens, if available. Otherwise why not just minimize the mixer during arranging?

I like the idea, it isn’t anything critical though (it’s more important drag’n’drop to vst plugins)

Hm… I have both opinions on this. On the one hand, sometimes when browsing for a sample only, a short one-shot type, I like to just use the down arrow key on the keyboard and have it play when I select it, which would be similar if not the same to single-click playing (in Adobe Audition the “auto-play” function on the browse window does this). On the other hand, sometimes I don’t want autoplay samples, and having a double-click means that I won’t accidentally play something I don’t want to play.

Frits, now i have 3 the “most wanted” features here.
1. Easy sidechain. Cause i make trance, its hard to live without it.
2. Pianoroll tool. “One in all” i’m satisfied on that “selectiontool” however, i would love to use it strech too, without that alt click
3. Proper mixer view. Now its just messy, its need to be more cleary. And that drag and drop for move effect, not copy. Also drag and drop to mixer chanel to other mixer chanell would be great!

So, you prefer not to use the keyboard at all when editing notes?

I hope to get back to mixer improvements later this year. The drag&drop of effect tracks is coming soon I hope.

Every extra mouse click, or every extra keyboard click kills your creative. Trust me. Currently there is too much features under different mouse menus or ctrl + XXX shortcuts. There is things which u can do much easier.

thcilnnahojI’m curious, what exactly is it you don’t like about the mixer (directed at LiquidProj3ct as well), except from drag-and-drop?
The signal flow is perfectly clear – if there’s an instrument, it’ll be at the bottom and sound just streams upwards from there.
The strips are nice and slim, you can have peak and RMS meters on every channel, you get to see and control fader movements on automation lanes, and it uses track colors in the most beautiful way possible, in my opinion, as it doesn’t color the actual controls.
And of course, the fader/meter grid is awesome too, once you get to know the hierachic concept a little better.
Maybe auto-resetting of peak values on stopping would be nice… hadn’t considered that yet.
Anyways, it’s great you decided to buy a licence, Moikkelis. 🙂
P.S.: Frits, I think it’s time to bring out that new Zydechain Compressor you’ve been burning the midnight oil on. 😈 (Just kidding)

I totally agree with those two feature request. I know that the way we do the sidechain is very flexible, but very slow also… and this can kill our creativity.
The piano roll feature request (i hope don’t annoy you Frits, i say, and repeat this, with my best wishes for Podium) is critical. I can do everything with pencil tool, except unselect notes. It should be an option where right click could unselect all selected notes and if you right click on a note you delete it. Take a look to FL Studio demo piano roll.
I don’t want say that we have to clone another sequencers behaviours, only those good points that do “special and excellent” the workflow of them.

Also, the name of mixer tracks is easily confused with a plugin name, so the name of mixer track should be highlighted.

It could be better. I definitely think Tracktions approach IMO is the best. Everything pretty much takes place below the arranger. The group panel is similar but Tracktions take on accessing various aspects of ones arrangement FX e.t.c is the easiest I have seen so far in any host. Something like that in Podium (especially since Tracktion appears to be history now) would be great.
