I am trying out Podium (version 2.2) to see if it will allow us to use some multichannel VST’s that we have written. From the specifications it looks like Podium will do what we would like it to, but I have not been successful in figuring out precisely how to set it up. We have a 32 channel in/out ASIO device (Podium sees the driver). We have two multichannel plugins that we would like to chain. 32 channels of input audio (from the 32 channel sound card) feed the first plugin which does some processing and outputs 16 channels. We have a second plugin that takes these 16 audio output channels from the first plugin, does some processing and outputs 5 channels (can be more in the future). We would like to route these 5 output channels to the first 5 output channels of the sound card. I tried a few things like grouping and child tracks to get the correct audio flow hierarchy, but could never get the plugins to source and sink the multiple channels in a simple way. Podium breaks the sound card device into 32 mono and 16 stereo audio inputs/outputs. I want to just have a single device that defines the sound card as a 32 channel device (or some definition other than mono or stereo). Can Podium do what I am trying to do? If so, could someone point me to an example or give me some suggestions on how to do this?

Yes, Podium can do what you want.

If you had the “Scan and import surround VST plugins” option checked when you created the project on the start page, you should have a set of surround audio input and output mappings. They should be named something like “Audio In [5.1]”, “Audio Out [5.1]” etc. There should also be “Audio In [32]” and “Audio Out [32]” mapings if your ASIO driver supports 32 channels. If you don’t see these mappings, you can create your own variations by copying one of the mono/stereo mappings and modify the name and the audio configuration settings in the mapping properties dialog.

Depending on how you have implemented the speaker configuration support in your plugins, the project should have multiple I/O insert mappings for your plugins. If not, again you can set it up manually in Podium by modifying the audio configuration properties in the plugin mappings.

Thanks for the pointer. As you said, the 32in/out appeared (along with 5.1 and 7.1). I think I have it working. I plugged the first VST to Track 1 (32 in and 16 out). Then on the master I plugged in the other VST (16 in and 5 out). I also see a 9-out. Not too sure where this came from. Our hardware is a little strange in that on the 32 output channels we only bring out signals on outputs 1 and 2 and then 8 ADAT channels on outputs 9-16. Maybe somehow the first 2 channels were considered stereo and the 8 ADAT mono giving a sum of 9 channels? I’ll do a little more digging. Overall, our impression is that Podium is a very nice program. Kudos. 😀

An observation: Unless all your tracks in the arrangement are feeding 16 channels to the master chain, then it’s probably best to have the 16>5 plugin as the last plugin on the track effect chain.

The mappings are created based on the channels you have enabled in the interfaces dialog. If you have an “Audio Out [9]” audio output mapping, then you must have had 9 consecutive channels enabled. Check if you have channel 8 or 17 enabled in the interfaces dialog.
