Just discovered that I can drop a wave file on top of a midi sequence playing a vsti (on the same track) and they both play back. Should this be possible? It doesn’t seem like it should be..
Mart.
Just tried it with z3ta and I could not get the wave file and midi data to play together. But I did manage to do it with another VSTi.
I can imagine a few ways to use such feature creatvely given enough time. I think Tracktion may allow for something similar. Actually it does. Just tried it.
Indeed, I can see there may creative possibilities here –
I just doubt that it’s intentionally coded into Podium š

Since a mapping can be what you want, an effect, an instrument or a bus, all combinations of audio and MIDI sequences are possible.
Perhaps that Frits has not coded Podium in order to have a wave file on a “MIDI track”, but he has obviously coded it to allow what we want to do with mappings, and tracks are neither audio nor MIDI, even not “tracks” really…
The difference between effects and instruments is only a consequence of the standard worflow in softwares that imitate audio hardware (like Cubase), and there are a lot of plugins which are instruments AND that can process audio, and effects that receive MIDI including notes.
I think that this distinction has no more real interest in modern softwares and I like a lot the concept of mappings in Podium which avoid it.
For me, I prefer to have seperate objects on separate lanes (with grouping !), I find it less confusing.
What “creative possibilities” do you think about ?

This behaviour is a consequence of how the hierarchic engine works. If the plugin mapping accepts audio input, then the audio will be routed into the plugin, otherwise it is routed upwards in the hierarchy. Some VSTi’s support audio input, which is why you may see that some synths will ‘consume’ the audio. Of course it is recommended to put the audio on a separate subtrack, to avoid getting a mess of overlapping sound and sequence events on the same track.

Allow me to rephrase that – …someone may find some creative possibilties from this…I just can’t think of any myself š

A very interesting discovery by Kingtubby, I certainly have not encountered it until this thread.
Thanks for explaining it in more detail Frits. The hierarchic engine remains a great idea. š

Well said.
