By default, any VST effect inserted will be mixed into the Mid/Side channel of any audio signal.
What if, for any new VST effect inserted, is as a Dry/Wet button for the Mid and and Dry/Wet button for the Side Channel? There is no host so far I’ve heard off offering this function.
Example:
A mono synth is playing a sound, A Reverb has been inserted, now you only want to cut off anything below 200Hz off the side channel with an EQ (in this case, it would have an effect on the Reverb only, since the Mono synth is on both Channels). You would insert the EQ, and mix it to 100% Wet on the Side channel, and 0% Dry to the Mid channel.
It would also render M/S function in VST plugins useless, if the host supports this function. Further it would extend any existing VST plugin on the market to work in M/S mode. Voxengo is going to release all their plugins with M/S processing. A new EQ plugin had been released by Nugen, supporting M/S EQ’ing. This would not be necessary if a Host supports this.
Selfspeaking this can be dangerous and can create a mess in the mix and kill mono compatibility – but the user already has the power by messing up his mix by using various plugins such as phase inverters and too heavy chorus effects anyway these days…
There is no way to save unexperienced users from damaging a mix anyway, this new feature would be no different.
Only the Master bus, there could be 3 new buttons: Stereo(default) / Mid / Side. By clicking any of these button its possible to hear the Stereo Mix (2 peak strips), the Mono channel (1 peak strip) or the Mid chanel (1 peak strip).
