I’m thinking about buying a new pc and was wondering about the current state of Vista. There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there about it compared to XP, so I’m just looking for some clear and concise guidance (links?), bearing in mind all that stuff about excessive ram usage with Vista over XP, amongst other things.
The other thing is, are there any potential problems with buying a pc with Vista, then downgrading to XP?

    Thanks,
    Mart.

I’ll leave the XP vs Vista discussion for others. But there is an issue intalling XP on a machine that originally had Vista. You need to make sure the manufacturer(s) of all of the hardware components made XP drivers. This was a pretty big issue when Vista first rolled out. A Lot of users wanted to jump to XP until things were worked out and a lot of companies had not made XP drivers for those components.

If you can find all the XP drivers I can’t see why a fresh install of XP would not work.

    Hi,

The last laptop that I have bought one year ago had Vista. I have spent a few days to look at the changes, and since it seemed to be not very reactive, to make the fans run a lot, I have just installed a second boot with XP : the computer has been faster and cooler with XP, so I boot one time a month in Vista, do some things during 10 minutes, and reboot into XP.

It is not bad, but for me, a good customized XP is far better, nicer and simpler.

It is like when OS X has replaced OS 9 (no, it was a lot worst !) : a lot of people (all people that do music that I know, including me) had continued to use OS 9 during a few years until it has been mature (10.3 for me).
The good thing with a double boot is that you are not forced to make a choice, it is safe. You will see by yourself after some time.

Thanks for the replies. Dual-boot seems like a reasonable solution for an off the shelf pc. The other option I’m considering is doing a bit of research into hardware/xp drivers and building my own box from scratch, though extra cost might be an issue with that I guess…
On another point, I recall reading somewhere that MS were considering releasing slimmed down versions of Vista for more specific usage i.e. music and so on – don’t know if there’s any truth in that?

    Cheers,
    Mart.
