hi
I’m wondering what caused a recent “catastrophic” crash on my newly rebuilt DAW (only changed motherboard from Asus P5B to P5K-E).
I was experimenting with emulated Mackie control of Cubase SX2 with my Behringer BCF and the TotalMix mixer of RME multiface.
I am using the newly implemented RME Direct Music Midi driver in Cubase, rather than the standard RME Windows midi driver – supposed to be better e.g. timing etc. ?
I was having trouble getting Cubase to release midi control when switching between windows – at some point I tried the “release ASIO driver when in background” option in Cubase.
Anyway, at one point I minimised the Cubase Window to try and get it to release focus (rather than just using Alt-Tab) – and the PC just rebooted !! Bang, no warning.
What sort of “catastrophic” problem would cause something like this ? I thought maybe hardware / driver / software interaction of some sort ?
Getting no joy from Cubase / RME forums so any thoughts appreciated..
thanks

Hi there Swayzak,
I can’t fix your problem …computers are very complicated things 😉 but I might be able to get you closer to a resolution?
Your PC didn’t actually just reboot, it blue-screened (BSOD).
My guess is that you are running Windows XP? Try going to Start-Control Panel-System-Advance tab and click the ‘Settings’ button in the Start up and recovery section.
Look in the middle of that panel under ‘System failure’ for a check box that has the description ‘Automatically Restart’.
Un-tick that box and next time the crash occurs you will see the error/bug-check report.
I guess this was Bill-and-the-gang’s way of hiding the infamous Blue Screen of Death.
Anyway now that you can see the BSOD, you can have a look what it says and perhaps try and chase it down.
For example: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms789516.aspx
Please note that from my experience, the BSOD will probably report something different each time and the descriptions thus won’t really be of much use.
Given that you have just changed out the MotherBoard I would be looking at driver issues first. Make sure your PC is stable for general use and then start testing your music apps one by one.
The only other alternative is to run a trace program that logs everything your PC does but this requires some pretty in-depth knowlege.
Hope this helps, Good luck 🙂
Many thanks
Will look into those !
Obviously I’m hoping this is a single episode specifically related to the strange combination of things I was doing at the time.
One thing I will try is reverting back to the Windows RME Midi driver in Cubase, as the Direct Music driver is very recent addition to their driver.
I guess the fact that SX2 is old and hasn’t been updated for 4 years may possibly be related as well … ?
No problem 🙂
If you suspect the program as the cause of the issue you can always check the support/forums. Typically any flaws will have been reported.
Might be a good idea to try this for the drivers as well? There may be many others who have run into similar problems.
