edit: I am aware there is a note-map editor, where you can choose to show which notes you want in the piano roll editor- could there be a “Quick Note Map” feature, where you select which midi notes [already drawn on the editor] you wish to see in the piano roll and hit a button ” quick note map ” this is akin to the Live feature ‘Fold’.
Also – does Podium allow you to edit multiple MIDI tracks on one piano roll?
cheers

If you use the “drum map” mode, then only the enabled notes are shown. In piano roll mode, only full disabled octaves will be hidden. If individual piano keys should be hidden, the white/black keys would be cut in half, which I think would be confusing. Isn’t the Live ‘Fold’ feature only available in drum view?

You’ll see ghost notes of other tracks in the piano roll background. Alt+click a ghost note to switch the editor to that sequence.
Thanks for the quick response:
This feature is often used for drum work, but I intend to use it for piano roll work. Live’s fold feature isn’t limited to drum map mode.
The intention would be to limit the piano roll notes to a certain scale etc. Yes it would make the actually ‘piano’ look strange [eliminating the familiar black/white note relation] however the graphics are irrelevant. In essence it makes the piano roll more like a traditional staff, where you define the flats and sharps at the beginning of the piece, in effect defining the scale. I haven’t had a chance to try the latest Podium with the new note-map installed, but can this already be achieved? If so, would you consider a “Quick Map” function where you select the midi notes existing on the track to fold down to it? – and then one could enter the Note Map editor dialogue to export

I’ve used the newest free version which contains the note mapping, and no, you cannot eliminate individual notes from the piano roll [even though it appears you have the ability to in the key editor itsef ]
please consider this feature, as I will have to look elsewhere for my DAW 🙁
I think this request is the exact equivalent to my wished ‘limited piano roll’: Podium allows you choose scales, then keys out of scale are greyed out which is a big help. However there isn’t a switch to limit new/moved notes to the keys in scale (moving up or down them). This is what you need I think.
You can create a work around in Podium using drummap. Download Chromatic scale from:
http://www.zynewave.com/wiki/doku.php?id=miscellaneous:index
Then open any piano roll clip in any track you want to “fold”, switch to drummap mode, open Note Map windows and import the file you’ve downloaded. Now select all the keys you want to eliminate from PR and click on one of their check boxes. All selected rows will be unselected.
Export the scale for inmediate future usage.
While I was making this small tutorial I realized that it would be good ideas:
– change the colour of headers too
– Once you press Edit Next button the Note Name text box should be focused
– Using any shortcut in the NoteMap editor, ie Alt+Click, you should be able to choose all the same keys simultaneously, ie, if you Alt+Click on C#2 then C#-2, C#-1, C#0…..C#8 would be selected too.
Probabily changing the headers colours would do the old Piano roll obsolete for us, since drum roll will do all piano roll can do and more (like this limit to scale request).
Liquid- thanks for the workaround! It is a rather tedious process, but nonetheless will achieve exactly what I am looking for. The developer mentioned that you can eliminate notes in the drum map editor, but I found it confusing as I want to work in the piano roll. Thanks for clearing it up.
I agree that a “Move Up/Down” feature in the note map editor is crucial. It would simply move all the current or selected checked boxes up or down to change key accordingly.
and to further elaborate on my first post –
a “Quick Note Map” in the drum map editor that takes the current selected MIDI notes and directly takes you to the note map dialog, automatically checking the notes you had selected on the roll/drum editor
– Using any shortcut in the NoteMap editor, ie Alt+Click, you should be able to choose all the same keys simultaneously, ie, if you Alt+Click on C#2 then C#-2, C#-1, C#0…..C#8 would be selected too.
This is also a great idea, possibly a button to “Select All Checked” so you wouldn’t have to go manually select every note you’ve chosen if you want to change keys.
also one more to end the feature request bombardment 😀 – Simply a “Note Map On/Off” button, so if you are working in a key and want to hit some accidentals or do something dissonant, (go back to the standard piano roll/chromatic drum roll) you can just turn off the Note Map and then click on again when you want to be back in your key. [as opposed to going to key map editor, reset, close, and then have to load up your previous saved one when you want to be back in key]
This would be a great feature to develop along in Podium, as I feel a lot of the code is already there – just a few more managing features in the Key Map Editor would give full capacity to edit the manner one inputs MIDI to their own needs and likings (and already have the ability to save !) I feel there is a desire for this feature, and many composers would be thrilled to see it further implemented in Podium.
Glad you liked it 🙂
Just remember export your work with limited keys, ie, “E Minor” or “Gb Pentatonic Major”, you will save time. Also it’s a good idea use a custom color in the main key of scale like this, ie, E Minor:

Maybe you could find useful work in drum mode and switch from drum mode to piano roll mode for write those ocassional notes.

I feel the same!
the more i think about it the more i like the idea!!!
i LOVE this scales idea… at the moment I simply draw the scale out in midi then copy and paste it ad infinitum on another track so the notes are ghosted on it… having the keys highlighted would be a massive benefit and i imaiinge easy to implement!
Also what font are you using liquidproj3ct that looks sweeeeeet!
Is very cool pitch up/down chords and melodies and they always fit in the scale 😉
The problem with this workaround is that drums are confused with melodies (ghost notes), and you cannot use more that one scale in the song. I think a proper PR limiter would be more useful.

I’m using Weltron Urban, normal and size 14. I think it’s installed with Adobe Reader or Windows Live. If you don’t find it I could upload it for you. The colour scheme is a lightly modified “Acid Energy” and you can download it from Wiki. And a custom editor profile 🙂
I like this as well… not only would it go well together with the drum map design if the piano roll were presented like, for example, Live’s or FL Studio’s…
…but it would then also be quite easy to “fold” unused notes as was suggested, without messing up the piano keyboard image.
The only difference between piano and drum modes would possibly be the lack of solo/mute buttons and (hopefully, for me ) that notes stay the same height regardless of velocity in piano mode.
