Podium 1.95, Windows 98, Sound Blaster Audigy Questions
    Hi,
I thought that if I entered this post with the heading mentioning my computer setup it might help others in the same situation. I could then add to this post with updates of what worked for me with my hardware and software configuration. My computer has the following setup –
Windows 98 SE OS, An Epox 8K7A+ motherboard, with a Socket A compatible AMD Athlon processor. I have 512 MB of ram, two Seagate 120 MB hard drives (C and E, both internal), an ATI All in Wonder Radeon 7500 graphics card, and a Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum sound card.
My objective was to make use of the multiple outputs that Podium has to fully use my 5.1 Surround set up in my small recording studio. I have not yet figured out how to do this.

    Dec. 25, 07 –
    Hi,
I seem to be stuck on getting my Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum 24 bit sound card with a set internal sampling rate of 48000Hz to work with the Demo 1.95 version of Podium. I have found several messages in the forum on this problem but no solutions.
The set up works all the way up to picking the Audigy ASIO Emu10kx interphase which then shows all the various active channels of the sound card. I noticed that the clock source and default sampling rate boxes are grayed out at “internal” and “48000 Hz”, and a message at the bottom of the box saying “Currently active audio stream . When I pick a “New Arrangement” at a sampling rate of 48000Hz or at 44100Hz and click O.K. I get the message “Podium, Could not initialize audio interphase at 44100Hz sample rate”. I also get this message if I close Podium and restart it. The program saves all my settings but before I can click on the “Create” button the message appears as well.
Does this mean that my sound card is incompatible with Podium?
Any solutions on this would be appreciated. I don’t know if it makes a difference but I am using Windows 98 SE for my OS.

If I remember correctly, then your Soundblaster only supports a sample rate of 48000, which explains why the default sample rate box is grayed out with 48000 as the only option. So you need to use a sample rate of 48000 in your arrangements. If you do this, do you get the error message saying it couldn’t initialize at 48000?
Also make sure there are no other applications running that uses the soundcard. If an application is using the soundcard it may prevent Podium from initializing the soundcard.

Since then I found that if I reinstalled the Podium 1.95 Demo program from scratch with a new podium.ini file, I could get to the point of choosing a new arrangement even after the message “Podium, Could not initialize audio interphase at 44100Hz sample rate” by proceeding and choosing a new arrangement and assigning the audio to 48000 Hz. I also assigned the midi to an input of Midi Port II and output to SB Audigy A, and B. I still can not get the midi track to work. There is something about istrument assignment but I am still trying to find out what it is. These selections work with Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. As I said before I got to the point of recording with a microphone to Line InputLine In 2-L of Audigy’s choices (If you use Audigy you will know what I mean). I then click on the “R” in track 1, uncheck the yellow “X”‘s, click on the “Monitor” and “Recording” buttons and click on the “Start Playback” button and I can record to track 1 and play it back.
Question 1 – Do you always have to choose a new assignment to reset the sample rate to 48000Hz?
Question 2 – Where is the rewind button after play back?
Question3 – How do I assign a track 2 to access my midi port II input? I have tried everything I can imagine including the tutorial on Wiki but nothing seems to work.

This is as far as I have got since the end of December. I seem to have a difficult time following the written tutorials, from other users or the one that comes with the software. They seem to be for other previous versions. Example, I do not have a “Project Wizard” in my Podium version. It’s like hitting dead ends and what should work does not, even after many attempts to follow the instructions exactly.

    Thank you for any suggestions,
    Sincerely,
    Pvbrat1

Question 1 – Do you always have to choose a new assignment to reset the sample rate to 48000Hz?

If the “default sample rate” setting in the MIDI/Audio Interfaces dialog is set to 48000, then all new arrangements you create will by default be set to this rate as well.

Question 2 – Where is the rewind button after play back?

There is no button for this. You can use the Q/W key shortcuts to move the edit cursor. Also check out the “link edit cursor to play cursor” option found in the view menu. If you keep this option disabled, then stopping playback will reset the play cursor to the last edit cursor position.

Question3 – How do I assign a track 2 to access my midi port II input?

I assume you followed the instructions on the “create new project” start page, and enabled your MIDI inputs prior to the final creation the project. If so you should see the MIDI inputs in the input panel of the track inspector. If you have created a new track, you can assign the MIDI input by double clicking the input object in the inspector, or by using the “Input” submenu when right-clicking the track header. On the same track you also need to assign the instrument that you want to play with the MIDI input.

If I get input should I add it to the string of this post or start another one?

Just hit the “post reply” button at the bottom of this topic page to add another post.

    Hi,
I checked out the tutorials in the posts above my post but I ran into the same problem of the tutorials not dealing directly with my Demo version. As an example I don’t see a “Project Wizard” in my version. I appreciate your help but I still don’t know how to assign the “instrument” to the midi track.
(“On the same track you also need to assign the instrument that you want to play with the MIDI input.”)
What is the “Instrument”? In the track inspector I have Track 2, Midi In (01), and when I right click on it I get the cascade windows saying Inputs, Midi Inputs, Midi In, Midi In (01). Do I have to assign something else? I am unclear on what a Vst Instrument is.
    Thank you,
    Sincerely,

As an example I don’t see a “Project Wizard” in my version.

This must be from one of the old videos. They are indeed outdated, but I keep them online because some of the features shown in the videos are still valid. The project wizard was removed a long time ago, and is replaced by the project start page you see when you first start up Podium. I recommend you study the written “getting started” tutorial in the Podium guide pdf file. This is also available in the wiki section:

What kind of device do you have connected to the MIDI input of your SB card? Is it a synthesizer or a simple MIDI keyboard controller (without sound)?

To play an instrument in Podium, you can either use VST instruments or hardware synthesizers. There are no VST instruments bundled with Podium, so you need to download those from other websites. There are plenty of freeware VST effect/instrument plugins available. A good database to search can be found at: http://www.kvraudio.com

    Hi,
    In answer to your question;
“What kind of device do you have connected to the MIDI input of your SB card? Is it a synthesizer or a simple MIDI keyboard controller (without sound)?”
I have a Casio CZ 3000 synthesizer with a midi out cable going directly into my Sound Blaster Audigy card on Midi Port II. Cakewalk Pro Audio detects it as well as the software keyboard included in Soundblaster Audigy. If I minimize the software keyboard inside Audigy or do not have the Cakewalk program running, there is no sound.
    Thank you,

If you wan’t to use Podium to play the Casio synthesizer, then you also need to connect the MIDI in on the Casio to a MIDI out port on the SB. Or do you want to use the Casio keyboard only for playing the onboard synth on the SB Audigy?

Ok. To play the onboard SB audigy synth:

Make sure you have enabled the SB synth MIDI outputs in the MIDI interfaces dialog. You should probably enable all your available MIDI outputs, except the Microsoft GS wavetable synth.

On the project start page, open the “import hardware definition” submenu with the menu button at the top of the devices panel. The submenu contains a few hardware specific definitions. If the Audigy synth supports the GM or GS MIDI format, then select the generic GM or GS instrument. Otherwise select the “generic multitimbral instrument” from the menu. In the import dialog that appears, select the Audigy synth in the MIDI output listbox. Leave the other three listboxes at the default first line. Press OK.

If you now go into the arrangement editor, you will find mappings for each of the 16 MIDI channels in the track inspector device list. Assign one of these mappings to a track, assign the MIDI input to the same track, enable monitoring with the power button in the transport toolbar, and then you should be able to play the Audigy synth on that MIDI channel. You can select a preset in the inspector preset panel. Assign one of the other Audigy MIDI channel mappings to another track, move the MIDI input there, and you can then play that channel, select another preset etc.

    Hi,
I have come to a decision that due to the age of my hardware and software that I would be better served by a simpler approach/setup to achieve my goal of using my Sound Blaster Audigy 5.1 surround sound feature with my speaker set up. I would like to thank you however for you suggestions and perhaps if and when I upgrade all of my computer equipment I will again attempt to try Podium. It looks like a great program and many users seem to understand and enjoy it.
    In trying to get Podium to work with the Windows 98SE OS using Sound Blaster Audigy and an ATI All in Wonder 7500 graphics card I kept having problems. Two of the biggest ones were;
1.) The graphic interphase constantly loosing the Monitor, Stop and Start Playback, and record buttons as well as other borders and edges of various graphic images. They would reappear if I dragged my Mouse over them from time to time and then disappear again. I was able to get the audio record and playback input to work.
2.) Most importantly was the complete reoccurring crash of Podium and freeze up of my computer and having to manually reboot repeatedly.
    The message that would appear was;
“Microsoft Visual C++ Run Time Library
    Run Time Error
    Program and path to Podium.exe
This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unsual way”
(Perhaps this might be of interest to you.)
3.) I also was never able to completely get to work or understand the midi assignment procedure.
In conclusion I would say that Podium is not Windows 98SE compatible, at least with my set up. I was able to find a program that works for me. It was an older version of Sound Forge’s Acid Pro Version 4 for Windows 98 that I had forgotten about. It seems to work well for my system and provides a simple interphase for the use of the Audigy 5.1 surround features.
I hope this helps any one else with concerns that my posts addressed.

    Thank you again,
    Pvbrat1
