I was wondering, is the installer really necessary?
Couldn’t we get rid of the installer and registry entries and ini-files on c:?
Just having to download and decompress and having everything needed to run podium in the podium folder itself?
We could put it on an usb-stick along with some vst’s working without installation.
No one getting suspicious at work, like when you drag out your private laptop. Put your headphones on and look incredibly busy clicking along in podium. 8)
Easier testing the betas, without worrying about leftovers from the full release. Wouldn’t that be great?
Nice idea that would be Uber cool… 🙂
I think Frits said something about copying some files via explorer
“program fileszynewavepodium” folder to the USB stick you want to use, this apparently should work. Not tried it but I think according to Frits comments it should work.
Here is a quote from one of the VIP threads…
“When you run Podium for the first time on a new PC it will automatically create the userappdatazynewavepodium folder on the PCs local harddrive, where it will save the Podium.ini file and the audio cache files.”
Do a search for “media” in the VIP forum only. 4th thread down in the results, page 2 on that thread. Not sure if it’s ok to discuss that threads subject matter outside the VIP forum so apologies for the cryptic directions to the thread 🙂 But as a side discussion briefly a USB version of Podium was discussed. 😉
Searched for it before, but wasn’t locked in, so the VIP section was left out. 😳
Got it now. Thanx Conquie!
Will try that. I suppose it will work as described, but still don’t like having that folder “userappdatazynewavepodium” created on the local harddrive.
Couldn’t we loose that path and have the Podium.ini file and the audio cache files in the podium folder, all self contained?
Else, everytime we test a beta we better copy that appdata podium folder from the full release to somewhere else, delete it and have a new one created by the latest beta we test. (Maybe it wouldn’t matter if we did not do that, but I remember it was often suggested to delete that folder and get it created anew, when there were problems with a new version of podium.)

I suspect it is possible but only Frits knows for sure.

Interesting points raised. I am definitely in favour of a portable version but Frits holds the keys to that version. It seems relatively simple based on his comments but only he knows just how easy adding some of your suggestions will be.
I would like to run Podium from a USB though, for sure. It will add to its appeal 😉
Got it usb-sticked. No probs.
But as mentioned in that other thread, it creates its podium.ini on c: in the folder “userappdatazynewavepodium” (only if it does not find one there already). A comp with minimum user rights would probably not like that.
All the other pathes (like file cache) can be changed from within podium. There is some other stuff also, the installer puts into the my documents folder of the system(projects and templates). They can be copied to the stick and the pathes changed accordingly. All very easy to do, I guess it would be a peace of cake, having the installer putting it all in the podium folder initially, or getting rid of the installer completely.
Is there actually a way of using relative pathes for the podium.exe?
(Its because, when using the stick on different computers, the absolute pathes might have to be changed again, because of the changing drive letter.)

Well done. 🙂

Maybe yes could pose a problem for some.

Based on what you have said…some way to tidy up the process, or have less copying to do would be nice. I need to try it myself at some point.

Good question about relative paths, dont know but Frits surely would.
EnergyXt and MuLab advertise their usb-stick portability as a feature.
Could be a selling point for Podium too.
Might be even a good reason for ppl, who normally use one of the big brother hosts, to buy Podium.
I am a student who is often away from home (and thus, my DAW) but I spend a lot of time at the university labs so for me, this feature is absolutely critical.
Podium is portable. I tried it. Although it writes something in the windows registry (nothing critical)
Yes, as I mentioned earlier I’d love to see complete portability as well, a great feat!

It isn’t fully portable, I was wrong. I think it writes something in registry as audio in/outputs, colors, profiles…
Maybe those things could be written in an “ini” file in the same folder that Podium.exe, so it would be portable. I’ve said this pretty happily, but maybe it’s difficult to code ><

I can’t see anything in the registry, and the .ini files are stored in:
C:Users…AppDataRoamingZynewavePodium
Mart.

You’re right 🙂 then, would be possible that Podium look for these files in the Podium.exe folder?
It already does!
From the changelog of 2.17:
“If the “Zynewave/Podium” application data folder created by the installer is not found when Podium is started, the folder where Podium.exe is located is used as data folder instead. The Podium.ini file will thus be stored in this folder. This makes it easier to run Podium from a flash drive on a PC system where Podium has not been installed.”
😮 😮 😮 I didn’t see that! Thanks you thcilnnahoj, I’ll try it 😀
