2.14 beta1 is available.
For this release I’m trying to get the guide updated with the new features before the release. So instead of the usual screenshots here, I refer to the new guide pages that are still under construction:
http://www.zynewave.com/wiki/doku.php?id=guide:browser_window
http://www.zynewave.com/wiki/doku.php?id=guide:favorite_folders
I hope to have the release ready in the weekend. Let me know if you find any bugs. As always, I welcome any comments you may have to the new features.
Changelog so far:
The track inspector can now be opened in one or more separate windows using the “New Inspector Window” command in the setup menu.
Created a new browser window. This replaces the old list window. The browser can be configured to show a project browser and a file browser. If both browsers are enabled they are placed side by side with a draggable divider.
Added a toolbar at the top of browser windows. This toolbar contains a menu button for browser options and optional buttons for toggling the project and file browsers, folder favorite buttons and a gain control for auditioning sound files.
The file browser menu has a “Favorites” submenu which can be used to quickly swap between often used folders. The Favorites are created with the “Add To Favorites” command. The “Organize Favorites…” command opens the “Favorite Folders” configuration dialog.
Enabling the “Audition On Focus Track” browser option will make auditioned sound files play on the focus track of the currently active arrangement. If the option is disabled auditioned files are sent directly to the master.
Enabling the “Audition On Bar Start” browser option will sync audition start if an arrangement is currently playing.
The Podium guide is updated with new chapters describing the browser window and the Favorite Folders dialog.
Added “SysEx…” command to the “New MIDI Parameter” submenu in the inspector parameter panel.
Floating Inspector! π― – didn’t expect that.
Okay, here are some suggestions:
– Filters for the Project browser to view only VST/VSTi + parameters; VST presets; Audio/MIDI sequences; Automation sequences. (If possible to seperate all these)
– A button for ‘Going up one level’ in the file browser, maybe to the left of the folder icon in the address bar. Like in pre-Vista Windows Explorer.
– Double clicking a file during auditioning should stop, not restart from the beginning. Maybe also change the keyboard shortcut (Esc) to Enter/Return for both starting and stopping.
Also, I’ve been repeatedly getting Visual C++ Runtime error crashes, likely related to the floating browser window. I’m not able to reproduce them exactly. π
When I simply close an arrangement and open another one, I get a crash.
Then, after starting Podium again, it happens with no browser visible, too.
Furthermore, sometimes, when the browser window’s open I become unable to delete sequences in the arrangement by pressing my DEL key.
Some thoughts:
1. Not sure about a floating inspector, i think is more comfortable docked :S maybe there is a good reason although ?
2. Should be more easy navigate between favorites, without use a menu. You could add favorites folder with custom names at the bottom of the file browser.
3. Please!!! Allow Drag&Drop to VST from file browser! that would be incredible useful with samplers and percusion samplers!
4. And about inspector, please allow drag&drop of clip to the sequencer.
Would that be a good moment to come up again with the idea of having midi parts drag and drop to work in both directions?
We already can get midi parts in. Though, the ultimate thing would be to edit and cut some midi in podium, then drag it over to a midi clip collection for later use in the arrangement. Like having some building blocks ready to quickly change things around.

I can see the use for accessing sequences of different types, but why would you want VST filters when you have that directly in the inspector device panel?

The space left of the folder icon is used to show the pin icon when files are linked in the current project. But maybe I could implement clicking on a subfolder part in the address bar to go up to that folder. That allows for quickly going more than one step upwards. Sort of like the way the address bar in Vista file explorer behaves, but without the arrow buttons between each subfolder. Good idea?

You did not get this bug in 2.13 and previous releases, right?
I haven’t experienced this bug myself. If you can reproduce it, please email me your Podium.ini file.
Furthermore, sometimes, when the browser window’s open I become unable to delete sequences in the arrangement by pressing my DEL key.
And you are sure that the arrangement editor has key focus? In other words, can you for example use the cursor keys to navigate in the arrangement editor?
A small bug: right-clicking the track part (where the track layout & faders are) of a floating track inspector opens the context menu at the wrong position (at the position where the attached track inspector is/may be).

Seen as all the devices are available from the browser anyway, I thought you might as well have the ability to access everything in one place, if you wanted.

Great, that’s even better.

That’s strange… No, it doesn’t happen with 2.13.
It occurs 9/10 times when I switch from one arrangement to another, so not perfectly reproduceable – also with the default setup generated by both 2.13/14.
I see that I’ve got VC++ Redistributables from 2005 and 2008 installed – I don’t see any newer one on the Microsoft site.
So, no one else having this problem? π Just try this please:
Start 2.14 – load default setup – open embedded or floating browser – open the Freebees project (through file menu or browser) – open Song A – open Song B – there’s the crash.
Furthermore, sometimes, when the browser window’s open I become unable to delete sequences in the arrangement by pressing my DEL key.

Yes – insert and everything works, just not delete. Switching focus to another panel and back seemed to help.

Thanks. Fixed in the new beta2.
Also new in beta2:
Moving the mouse over the file browser address bar will highlight parent folders. Clicking the mouse will jump to the highlighted folder.

Someone has requested this before. It was an easy thing to implement. It also makes the UI more consistent, as the docked browser also can be opened in separate windows.
2. Should be more easy navigate between favorites, without use a menu. You could add favorites folder with custom names at the bottom of the file browser.
What about the new favorite buttons in the top toolbar? If you move the mouse over the buttons the popup help displays the full path.
3. Please!!! Allow Drag&Drop to VST from file browser! that would be incredible useful with samplers and percusion samplers!
In a future update.

Agreed. But I’d like to postpone this to a future update.

I’ve just managed to get a crash too. I’ll investigate tomorrow.

Oooops I’m blind π however the audition gain control should be in another place because when you have ten favorites it’s difficult see it

Thanks, I really hope it because the most of my samples are small samples for use in a sampler.

Took me a whole day to trace this bug. One of those bugs that did not occur when running Podium in debugging mode. Please try the new beta3 and let me know if this fixes the problems you have experienced.
Also new in beta 3:
Sequence and sound events can be dragged from the event list in the track inspector.

Fantastic! Everything crash-related is fine now. 8)
As for the delete key thingy… I’ll let you know, should it creep up again.

Oooooooohhhhh thanks you Frits! Now I can copy easily sequences from the start of the song to the end. However IΒ‘d say that drag should move the clip, drag with Ctrl for create a new copy, and drag with Alt for create a phantom copy, as it’s usual with sequences.
thanks! π
