    Frits,

I know this may be a somewhat more complex suggestion, it harkens back to the SSL mixing consoles. On each SSL input channel, there was a Parametric EQ and a compressor built in to each input channel. I realize that much of the compression tasks can be handled by drawing volume envelopes for the track, but in order to use EQ you must run an instance of an EQ VST plug-in for each track. To me, EQs and compressors are essential for every track I record and mix. I use EQ when I cut my tracks (generally my mixing consoles EQ) and when I mix my tracks (generally an EQ VST plug-in that is run in Podium).

How difficult is it to create a 4 or 5 band parametric Equalizer that that gets automatically added everytime a new track is created? Maybe even pop up a dialog box when you atempt to create a New track, that asks you if you would like an EQ added to the track. Or, similar to the way you did Bounce Tracks, by allowing the user to add an EQ after the track is created.

I know you don’t want to get into creating a suite of VST plug-ins, but an EQ is such an essential component, especially during the mixdown process. Having to add separate, EQ plug-ins for every channel gets tedious. This feature would add so much to Podium’s functionality!

I’ve been thinking about a solution where you in the arrangement properties can define one or more VST plugins to be used as channel plugins. Adding an EQ plugin here would then make the plugin parameters appear as dials inlined in the mixer channel strips (on the tracks where it has been enabled). This way you can more easily use your favorite VST effects as channel plugins. Implementing this would make it unnecessary for Podium to have builtin effects. Even if I could implement high-quality EQ and compression, there will always be someone who will not like the ‘flavour’ of the effects.

This idea is still in the design phase, so I don’t have an estimate on when it will be done.

Hey Frits, that would work great. This way you only need one good Parametric EQ plug-in and it will be accessible from each channel strip. EQing channels is such an essential part of mixing and it’s amazing how many DAWS ignore it or implement it awkwardly. I like the flexibility of your approach, giving the user the choice of plug-ins to use. Being able to access bandwith and frequency selection directly from the mixer strip would be big! As always, I appreciate the quick feedback and wish you a Merry Christmas if I don’t get the chance to chat with you by then…AL

That’s an excellent solution, Frits. Add my vote to Alphonse’s.

Frits – thats a really novel approach, I like it. Of course, depending on the plug, the number of dials could alter enormously, but that would still be a great way forward.

Also it would mean that EQ/Comp could be applied anywhere in the signal chain (but more tidily than now), without any great fuss.

I guess that might be on the list then..!

depending on the plug, the number of dials could alter enormously

The inlined dials would be based on the parameter objects defined for the plugin, so if the plugin has a large number of unneeded parameters, you could just delete those parameter objects.

I’m considering a more advanced solution, by adding some kind of graphic control type setting to the parameter properties. I’ll be experimenting with this when I start on the emulated editor for GUIless plugins.

Please pardon if this is a dumb question, but will there be something similar for MIDI tracks?

Not in the first attempt. It could be added later on.
