PodianerParticipantHi Frits,
I know I brought this up before, but since I hope it will not be a big deal, I thought I might mention this again. Have you considered to feature MP3 in Podium any time in the future? Perhaps you could add a command in the File menu of the sound editor such as “export as MP3”. You could utilize the free Lame Encoder, which would save you any licensing fees. I really don’t know how complicated such an implementation would be. But as nearly every other host can do this already, I thought it’s time for Podium to “follow” ๐
MP3 is quite important when you want to send a file over the internet. I know, that I can use sound editors like Audacity in order to do that job. But perhaps other users will feel the urge of this feature in Podium, too..
Any thoughts? ๐

haikuParticipantThis is huge for me too.
When I’m done, I’d love to just render the project into an MP3 and be good to go like when I’m working in FL.

darcyb62ParticipantSince you mentioned that “perhaps other users will feel the urge of this in Podium, too” I have to mention that I have no compelling desire to see “export to mp3” functionality in Podium. This functionality was implemented in Tracktion and for me it is still a two step process as I always create a wav file 1st.
January 3, 2007 at 17:43 #8506
PodianerParticipantBut with the way I described, you’ll still have your wave file. That is different to Tracktion’s approach.
I don’t know, why it should be bad to safe some time here.. It is much more clicks to open a dedicated MP3-converting-tool. And most hosts I tested have this: Cubase, Nuendo, Tracktion, Reaper, Samplitude, Magix Music Studio, Sonar…
I don’t know why somebody can be against this feature..

darcyb62ParticipantI’m not saying it shouldn’t be done if there is a benefit to others. I’m just adding my 2 cents in saying that I wouldn’t benefit from it. I would much sooner see midi controller support added as I don’t have a way around that in Podium. I have a workaround that I am completely happy with when it comes to creating mp3s.
and I don’t see how your approach is any different then Tracktions’ approach. It uses LAME as well.

When you export to MP3 in Tracktion, there is only one file created for the export, a MP3 file. If you have the option in Podium’s sound editor, you would have bounced your master file before. Thus you have the original uncompressed sound file, and your MP3 file. That is different to Tracktion.
Controller Support is important, too! I agree here. Frits can’t implement everything at the same time, I know that. We’ll see..

I got it… But if I want both a wav and an mp3 file it is still a two step process both ways as you may not always want to bounce the master…
Thinking about this… Here is a real life example where I see a one step process working… Last year I collaborated with a guy on a song with both of us using Tracktion. In transferring files back and forth we exported tracks in Tracktion and then compresses using ogg-vorbis (Tracktion did not have the mp3 format yet). As we worked on the song we forward these ogg files back and forth (don’t forget that Tracktion has native support of the ogg compression format) and once we were done I exported and sent him a lossless encoded ogg file. In this type of scenario I see it working quite well. But nobody wants to collaborate with me anymore… ๐ ๐

xis23Participanti would like an ‘open in external audio editor’ button….. this would save you having to locate the file of the audio again in the external audio editor….

This is a very good idea!! Perhaps, this is easier to implement, Frits? I would like this option..

Do you know http://www.digitalmusician.net ? This is a very cool site. They offer a VST or RTAS Plugin that enables you to record the audio of somebody over your internet connection. You can get the plugin for free, but it is limited in quality to 128 kbit/sec… enough for demo purposes imo. For 10 Euros per month you get a pro sound quality. The site is also a platform for getting to know other musicians. I’ll try the plugin for myself.. I hope it’ll work with Podium..

Yes. ๐
The ideas for MP3 usage with Lame are worth a try as well I think. MP3 support in Podium of some sort would be nice.

ZynewaveKeymasterI have thought about adding an “export” command to the file menu in the sound editor. This would then bring up a dialog where you can select the format of the file such as wav or mp3. For wav files there would be further options for setting bit depth and dither.

xis23Participantwould we be able to get an ‘open with external editor’ box for sound events? so you click on it and it automatically opens it in the user’s editor of choice?

I’ll think about it.
