Hello,
After looking for software to create 5.1-Music, I came across Jean Marcs wonderful world of AcousModules – multichannel vst’s. And after succesfully trying them out in the demo version of Podium, I’m looking forward to purchase the real thing. π
One question arises: What Music-playing software allows people to enjoy the output? (on a PC with 5.1 capabilty… right soundcard, speakers etc)
As far as I understand, it is rendered or bounced to 32-bit 6-Channel Wave (extended?) Files.
The Window-Media Player 9+ can only handle up to 24-bit (6 or 8 Channels) files.
I couldn’t get Foobar + Freesurround-plugin to play them in 5.1 .
All other information in the web either deals with lossy conversion or expensive DVD/Hardware Players. π
I think Jean Marc would be the best person to ask about this. Maybe his website has some info on what multi-channel players are available:
Thanks for your fast reply Frits. I asked this question in the KVR forum too. The only players Jean mentions on his site are ones that need a host.
Since WMP plays 16-Bit/5.1, is it possible to render from Podium to 16-Bit?
(I only rendered with the bounce-function up to now, which uses the engine bit resolution – 32/64 floating point)
Ahh, the Wavewizard http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=95265 converted it to 16-Bit and now it’s not distorted anymore in the WMP and the delays are definitley 5.1
Thanks to you, Jean & Johnman for opening this door. My purchase order is coming in two weeks or so! 8)

You can enter the sound properties dialog for the sound on the master track, and change it from float to 16 bit. Note that this will not automatically apply dither to the rendered 16 bit audio, so for best results you would need to add a dithering plugin at the top of your master plugin chain.
Another hint: you can try wavosaur. free (and pretty good) wave editor. capable of performing various tasks like all kind of conversion…but I’m not sure if it can handle multi-channel-wave (except stereo) stuff as I never tried that.
@ Zynewave: You mean the Sound Properties in the ‘Arrangement & Sounds’ Window?
@ ronin: thanks, wavesaur can even load vst’s. I think it does work with multichannels. In the ‘Process-convert to mono’ menu there are options for all 5 channels. And in Options- Audio-Out it reconizes all 8 configurations of my Soundblaster-Card.
I’ll post the news as soon as I figured it out some more.

Yes, that’s one place to access the dialog. You can also open the sound properties dialog from the “List” panel or the sound events placed on tracks.
edit: Sorry, don’t post before your second cup of coffee π³
