    Update:

    I see a lot of people complaining about IK Multimedia Custom Shop an awful lot (various bugs – the plugins suddenly stop working or cause crashes or error messages …). I must admit that I haven’t had any problems with Amplitube Free, but I had it installed on my old XP machine only for a short time and when I tested it against years old SimulAnalog Guitar Suite ………… well, I decided not to install it on my new machines (and later I read about other people’s problems with those plugins – both AmpliTube and T-Racks). Check this thread for really good free guitar plugins. And if you miss a standalone app I would strongly recommend Live Professor as an alternative, which is rock solid, easy to use, out of beta now, but there’s still a free version:

    TBH, I haven’t had the time to try this, but I tried AmpliTube 3 free. So, you can try both if you haven’t. Just read how it all works:

    Hey, alex,

    Well, certainly, this is one valid way to go with building one’s amp sound. I’d say perhaps as many as 50% of guitarists are using this one or that other major competitor that is using this ‘amp store’ setup to sell their goodies.

    But I’ve gone about it the other way. I simply auditioned practically all, including a couple of these, and then I chose the best company in my opinion and best price, Scuffham Amps, maker of the very highly rated S-Gear bundle of three boutique-structured amps and deluxe effects. To add to those, while Mike at Scuffham is designing a nice OD device and other free additions to his ‘package’, I’ve built up a collection of ‘pedals’, or I should say the software clones thereof, that are offered as freeware around the Net. Some of them are actually much better than what you’ll find at these amp shop places, some due to patent issues.

    I don’t have the sites to link, but they are easily searched and downloaded. In fact, I’ll be very honest to say that I WON’T post some of these lessor-known among them on other forums. Why give away the hot sounds you’ve searched so hard and then demoed thoroughly to acquire to forum members who are sometimes even adversarial types? Well, I hope it is obvious that this forum and its dedicated followers hold a special place to my thinking. I’ve posted yet-unreleased and little-known facts and news items here and nowhere else — and often. Not my problem if non-Podium users aren’t clever enough to hunt tips and info at other forums that are outside the tunnel vision of the mainstream.

    I’m not knocking the validity of the IK group, except to say I don’t like the way I was constantly junk mailed with yet another amp or item to buy, and I didn’t care for the whole registration and download structure. The amp shop setup appeared cute to me . . . until I had to use it. This is merely my personal choice and opinion. Others, obviously, it may suit better. [Edit} I want to add that some of the amps in amp shop didn’t sound very good to me, didn’t sound like the amp they claimed to model sometimes. Finally, I’d rather pay for my amps at a very good price once and get it over with permanently.

    Here are the very best of freeware pedals that I have found and now have at my disposal, again, easily searched and acquired (search under these names):

    Very obvious Tube Screamer clones: TSE808 and TS-999;
    More than obvious Fuzz Face and Fender Blender clones: Face Bender (two plugs in one window);
    the rare Rangemaster in clone form: Rangebastard
    the new ProCo Rat pedal clone: TSE_R47_1.0

    I’d be very interested in hearing back from any of our Podium guitarists as regards their opinions on any/all of these! Happy downloading!

    Cheers!

    Yes, that is the way for them to sell their stuff, but I think what they offer for free is good (I’ll find some time today to check out that eq and meters). Well, registration, download, being junk mailed ……. that can all be annoying.

    All the plugs you mentioned are great.

    There’re so many plugs I like I don’t even know where to start.

    Two amps, five stompboxes. No GUI, great sound.

    All LePou plugs are great. This is the one I like best.

    The Anvil and NRR-1 – great preamps (TS-999 is also here 😀 ):

    Finally, two impulse response loaders I use are:

    And if somebody needs guitar cab irs:

    There’s more, but I can’t remember right now.

    Since you’re bumping this one, I’ll add this Plektron site. Nice cabs, both mono and stereo, for free, comes with some IRs or you can use others. I bought their POWERED amp head for just those couple of dollars ’cause it will do heavier stuff and S-Gear doesn’t have a metal amp yet.

    I use these cabs when I’m too lazy to set up S-Gear or want to check out a different amp or FX pedal.

    Nice! Those are totally new to me.

    Just wanted to link TSE Audio. You mentioned 808 and R47 in your post here and that reminded me of X50. So, they’re all here:

    I guess everybody knows about this one, but I’ll link it anyway:

    This particular ‘freeware roundup’ as they call it, contains several of the instruments and effects that we have mentioned in several of our threads. One in particular that I like among these is Jacky Ligon’s XenFont. It can be used as a sturdy, regular font player without any need to dabble into microtonality, yet that feature is always available just a click away. His excelent VA synth, Ivor, is worth your consideration when at his site, along with the larger FM synth Xenharmonic.

    What I find most curious about this current roundup is that TSE’s X50 amp head is included here. Perhaps it has had an upgrade, but this amp has been around quite some time and is already well-known. I find it the best EVH 5150 software emulation yet for those seeking the heavier guitar sounds.

    Anyway, here is the link:

    Yeah, you’re right, it is a Peavey 5150 emulation. And, yes again – last time I checked it was still in beta, a bit cpu hungry, but fully functional. So, I was pleasantly surprised to see it’s v1.0.2 now.

    Hey, alex. I just wanted to mention, also — you prefer the HyBrit. That’s a sharp amp, but I ended up liking the Le456 best. Everything he offers is really nice. Ever try loading up all six cabs on his LeCab2? I haven’t got around to it yet.

    No, I haven’t tried to do that, but maybe I will now. TBH, I haven’t had much time to play with plugins lately – as you can see pretty much all the plugins I’ve posted about are already well known. And, about HyBrit – it’s not really that I prefer it to some other – I simply try to collect the best plugins for every genre. O.K. let me put it this way – I own a jcm800 half stack but also a tween and lately I’m mostly using blues deluxe (also had a vox AC 30 before and some others). So, yes , I like many things (btw I’m always laughing when I read some threads about this amp or guitar vs that amp or guitar). I equally enjoy playing my lp and my tele. But that’s a bit OT, now. I actually wanted to discuss overdrive and distortion (it’s a thin line, I know, and I’m sure 10 different players will give 10 different answers about what’s distortion and what’s od, but I’m sure you know what I’m talking about). What I like, when we’re talking about any of those amps mentioned above is to use its own drive and what I now have on my pedalboard is an SD-1 which replaced the real thing a couple of years ago when it was stolen – yes it is a poor man’s TS-808 (same basic circuit) and I think it’s well worth mentioning on this forum, because, there’s a lot of beginners and people on low budget here. So if all somebody can afford is a cheap solid state amp, he/she probably can’t afford a Tube Screamer and in that case an SD-1 can make all the difference. Anyways, when we talk about the big guitar sound, I don’t think that what many people consider distortion (fizzy, bassy, over saturated, whatever sound, where one can’t really hear what a player is doing with his right hand) can help much – I’d rather take care of action (set it higher), strings (choose a heavier set), or both, but you already know that.

    Cheers, Alex
