Topic: Usability request: vertical gridlines in arrangement window

    Hi Frits

    I’ve noticed something many times before – but have only now bothered to post about it – that the vertical gridlines in the arrangement window don’t line up with the bar marker lines at the top. If you zoom in and out, these lines seem to change where they line up to.

    Do these vertical gridlines represent something else? It would be great if we could toggle the gridlines so, if we wanted, they will always line up with bars no matter how far in or out the zoom is. This would certainly give a better feel to the arranging process, because at the moment if I look at my arrangement, the midi and audio clips positions seem to have nothing to do with the gridline positions, and I have to zoom right in sometimes to ensure the clips are lined up with bars and fractions of bars. If the gridlines matched bar positions, arrangement could be done even when the whole arrangement was zoomed out to fit on the screen.

    The reason why this occurs is because the time-ruler skips the highlighting of bar lines if it would overlap the previously written bar number. But I agree it is not consistent. Would the right solution be that all the editor gridlines mimic the highlighted bars in the time-ruler?

    yes, that solution would be fine where the editor gridlines mimic the highlighted bars in the time-ruler…

    but…

    I would suggest that the highlighted bars and bar numbers in the time-ruler always represent bars with odd numbers only, when zoomed out

    For example, at 100% zoom the bars showing would be
    1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 29 30 31 32 33

    however, after zooming out a bit more the bar numbers showing would be
    1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 31 33

    after zooming out further still
    1 5 9 13 17 21 25 29 33

    and further still
    1 9 17 25 33

    At the moment, irregular bar numbers are shown (depending on the zoom) eg
    1 4 7 9 10 13 16 19 22 25 28

    Which doesn’t reflect real life, where most producers are thinking in terms of 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 bar sections…

    Hope this makes sense?

    If you changed the highlighted bar numbers like this, and then matched the editor gridlines with them, it would more logical, and more user friendly. I would highly encourage you to change Podium to work in this manner, as for anyone making music in 4/4 time it’s currently a little irregular

    or the short version: the time-ruler bar numbers and lines should match the current editor gridlines, which mark out bars/fractions of bar at the moment

    just to clarify: this is more of an issue when you are zoomed right out in an arrangement, for example when a whole track is visible in the arrangement editor

    once you start zooming in (so approx 32 bars or less are visible in the arrangement editor, in my current setup) the time-ruler bar numbers/lines match the editor gridlines

    I have changed the grid line resolution to binary jumps when zoomed out. This means that gridlines shown in the time ruler always matches the grid lines in the editor area. There are still twice the gap between gridlines in the ruler, to make room for the bar numbers. Will be available in release 1.45.
