About the only real shortcoming that I’m finding in the multitrack capabilities of Podium is the lack of effects. It helps that I’ve picked up some issues of Computer Music (where I got Podium in the first place). I think it’d be great if Podium came with or partnered with some of the great freeware VST effects and instrument makers. From CM’s free plug-in issue, I’ve experienced (and love) Nebula Free, String Theory, and some other really great tools.

I don’t know if you’ve explored this topic, Frits, or what your opinion on this matter is but there are a lot of great plug-in developers that would make partnering a great thing. They worry about developing their thing and you worry about making Podium’s GUI and functionality the best that it is (and it is… man. I can’t say enough how impressed I am with this program).

    Interesting thoughts.

I think if Frits had enough time he would have already produced a Sampler, the now almost mythical ZGrid and the ZMaster (which I think is a suite of plugs in one) So certainly he has the skills to produce VST FX (zReverb e.t.c) and VSTi’s but he has to carefully spend his time developing areas within Podium (plugs or core host) where existing users and potential users would prefer him to, at any given time.

Not easy, but he has done a great job so far IMO.

Your idea sounds interesting though, perhaps Frits has considered your idea already in the past, but possibly managing it all could be the problem. If he stays focused on his own plugs then he has 100% control of it all. Development, testing, maintenance and delivery.

Also as a user of Podium for some time now it’s rock solid stability is probably best kept that way by having everything done by Frits.

It does mean a little longer for certain things but when they arrive they are 100% rock solid. So far Frits has got that right every time.

Anyway that is just my view 🙂 Frits may see it in a different way but your suggestions are interesting, only Frits can give a yay or nay. He may even like your ideas. 😉

Bundling plugins with the Podium installer would make the download much bigger. Considering the frequent updates of Podium I’d like to keep the download as small as possible, and I’d rather avoid the extra work with maintaining more than one installer. In the case of freeware, I think it is much easier to keep a list of links to the freeware developer websites. This way I won’t be held responsible for plugin support and I won’t have to keep track of plugin updates. Some hosts come with special versions of commercial plugins, but this is mostly for hosts that ship on a CD in a box.

As soon as I get through the major missing features in Podium, I plan to spend more time on developing new plugins for the zPlugin series. So far we have zPEQ, zReverb and zPitch.

This is what I thought would be a possible stumbling block to the existing set up you have, which has worked well anyway. 8)

Exactly what I thought…(time), if you had enough hours in a day… 😉
