your USB device could be being powered down automatically by Windows

The US-600 is externally powered so there is no way I would know if Windows was doing something stupid like that, but it does have a USB indicator LED on the front that never goes out.
I *do* believe that the TASCAM driver is a bit flaky – there are times when I fire up Podium that it takes forever to come up, then gives me an error saying “can’t initialize audio interface.” I have to pull the USB connection and plug it back in to “reset” something, then it works. ANd in that case also other programs are still able to use the device, so this is a Podium-specific issue.

I thought that ZynAddWhatever was one of the very few instruments that doesn’t work in Podium.

ZynAddSubFx has been working beautifully for about 6 months, until just a couple weeks ago when these frequent crashes started. ANd I am not even pushing Podium very hard with the projects I am working on right now – I only have a dozen or so tracks laid down on a couple of compositions (in a large part thanks to the issues with Podium).

I thoroughly dislike ZynAddEtcEtc … as being the most uninspiring synth (next to SynthMaster and one or two other bloated, complicated, over-rated instruments) that I ever encountered.

It is the only synth I use, and I am quite happy with it. I must admit that the patch bank that comes with it stinks on ice, but since I do all my own patching I don’t really care. So far the only limitation I have found with it is due to the MIDI-centric design – I come from the world of modular analog synths where I expect to be able to route triggers independently of the notes, but with MIDI they are stuck together. I also like it because it is open source and the dev team is a friendly bunch – with their help I almost have it compiling in my environment so I can start experimenting with my own ideas on how a softsynth should work (like splitting the note and trigger paths…).
If you can recommend a better open-source synth I would be happy to try it out.

Feel free to pop over to SoundCloud and check out the stuff I am doing with it. Check out “Elephino” and “eTune Opus 1 Number 4” to see the wide range of capabilities.

Of course you can individually save clips from the “File” menu in Editor, but
if you save the clip automation (which has ‘spline’ points) as a MIDI file will be small errors 😥 …

I tried that method, and it appears there are a lot of details that get lost in the MIDI translation – hence my search for a better way. I really like the template method because it preserves the tweaks I have made to the synth patch as well.

THanks sobaka! That is even better 😀

I suppose an update is in order. Podium (32 bit) is working fantastically under Win7-64. My system consists of:

Yamaha keyboard –> Yamaha USB MIDI driver
TASCAM US-600 <--> TASCAM ASIO driver
ALesis PercPad –> TASCAM MIDI in
MIDI-OX for MIDI aggregation / mapping
    LoopBe connects MIDI-OX <--> Podium
    Podium (32-bit licensed)

@kim_otcj – I remember the Amiga, quite the cats meow at the time but far too pricey for a starving college student. I was using a homebrew Z-80 system at the time, with an old ADM-3A terminal that I picked up surplus. And I was perpetually broke from buying analog synths and buying parts for a fully polyphonic monster that I built (and drugs, alcohol, and women, but that is another story… 😳 ).

But you are absolutely right about the “sheer exuberance of messing with the software.” I keep meaning to get down to some serious composing with ZynAddSubFx / Podium, but I wave my mouse around and cool music comes out! With no scotch tape or razor blades in sight! It is difficult NOT to just play around 😀

I must admit that I am beginning to chafe under some of the limitations of ZynAddSubFx – it took me the better part of 2 weeks to build up the patches for the percussion instruments I used on “eTune,” and I am not at all happy still with some of them. But it is open source, and I almost have the code compiling in my environment, so I’ll be fixing that shortly 😯 Someone also gave me a broken and disassembled Moog Source that I am trying to bring back to life, and that will add some nice, fat analog minimoog sounds to my palette, and I dug my old pickup out of the shed and put it in a cheap 12-string guitar so I can add some guitar licks.

Now I just need some more time to play with it all…..

No apology necessary, @Levendis. I was more than a little flattered that anyone besides me would post ANYTHING of mine anywhere.

    Not COMplaining, just EXplaining. 😆

I am really getting to like Podium 😀

Ish Kabbible’s eTune Op 1 No 4 (Fuzzy Disco Balls mix)

    All sounds generated with ZynAddSubFx
TAL Vocoder II makes a cameo appearance in “eTune”.
    All sequencing in Podium
    Final mix in Audacity

    “Research” by Ish Kabbible

THanks for the plug, Levendis! I had forgotten about this forum as I am most often over on the ZynAddSubFx forums on KVR. For me, Podium is just the “keyboard stand” that I put ZynAddSubFx on when I play it 😉 ANd like a good stand, it never gives me any grief 😀 so I’m not out looking for help with it.
But I must say you picked my least favorite piece to plug. 😳 “Research” was really just me learning to use Podium. I am actually much happier with how my other two Podium / ZynAddSubFx pieces came out:

    “Error On An eString”
    and
“Ishkabbible’s eTune Op 1 No 4 (Fuzzy Disco Balls mix)”

ANd I have two more in work – one nearly complete and one just getting started. In the last couple of months I have gone from bored-and-hoping-I-would-still-have-a-job-in-6-months to being so far up to my ass in alligators that I have to put bathroom breaks on my schedule, so my music production has slowed considerably 😥 But once I get them up on Soundcloud I’ll try to remember to post them on Poppets.
