The only sequencer/DAW apps that score well to video (AFAIK) are Nuendo and Samplitude Pro. Vegas doesn’t handle vsti’s (vst’s yes but not instruments) so there is no solution there. With that said, most of the DAWs use a little thumbnail representation of the video and the results vary from app to app.
I’m pretty sure this dog ain’t gonna hunt but… 🙂
…wouldn’t it be cool if Podium could handle such things natively…
(**ducks down and runs out the door**)
yep. nuendo and samp pro are ridiculously expensive. and yes, if a simple video playback were implemented into podium it would be life saving.
i’ve tried podium before. its difficult to wrap you’re head around. so much so that i’ve lost interest cause i wanted to get on with making music. but i know that with persistance, its ‘difficulty’ would pay dividends with flexibility. not to mention, it just looks and feels gorgeous. damn, i wish i knew (and had the time) to code…i’d build a simple video playback plugin….
( joins you in ducking and running out of the door)
and i have tried the MoviePlayer pluggo plugin. it seems to want to work in podium. but sometimes it doesn’t sync. funnily enough, i saw on the VideoVST ReadMe:
“Many hosts do not automatically keep plugins running when playback is stopped, so you will probably need to change an option to enable this in your host. Reaper has the option in options/preferences/audio/Run Fx When Stopped, in Tracktion this option is called “e-to-e”, or End-to-End playback, and in Orion Pro this is Audio Output Settings/Always running. If you do not turn these options on, your host application will not send the playback-stop-signal to the VST plugins so VideoVST will not know when to stop.”
Even though this is a statement from VideoVST, might it also apply to the MoviePlayer plugin? (whereas the VideoVST doesn’t want to play at all in podium)
how might i be able to change these options in podium?
thanks a lot guys/gals!
i wonder how far along Image Line is with their vst version of their video player….
gonna check it….
thanks for the replies. too bad about VideoVST. Is it me or is it kinda cooky that there isn’t a single video player plugin for the PC thats stable enough to use? Free or paid. cause believe me i’d pay for one! these are creative-multimedia-times ya’ll! 😮
doesn’t this, at least indirectly, affect the hold that apple has a on the multimedia market? if someone could develop a stable vst video plugin for the pc, that would take quite a few bills from ole’ Job’s pocket.
does cubase have its own native surround and video functions?
🙂

When i drag and drop the midi parameter from the list window onto the track lane
You need to place the parameter object under the VAZ device definition (in the same folder as the pitch bend etc. params are located). When you have done this the parameter should appear in the track inspector parameter panel. Double clicking the parameter here will set up an automation track. Also note that you should select the “record as curve sequence…” option in the parameter properties dialog.
thanks. but for some reason podium won’t let me place the parameter object under the VAZ device definition. when i try, the circle/cross icon appears. the only place that i can drop the parameter object is in the track lanes. hmmm.
i appreciate the quick and thorough customer support….especially since i have a free version! rest assured, once i get a few niggles figured out, and get used to the workflow, i’ll show my appreciation by making the purchase.
thanks again!

but I think the ‘new midi parameter’ button may have been added since the CM 1.77 version was released
Correct. With 1.77 you need to manually create the extra MIDI parameter objects you need, using the shortcut menus in the list window.
great. thanks for the response.
so, i’ve created an extra midi parameter (named “sample position”) as you described above, and i can see it in the list window.
i’ve assigned the midi parameter to CC 74 and gave it a range from 0-127.
I’ve gone into Vaz’s local mappings and assigned CC 74 to the sample position.
When i drag and drop the midi parameter from the list window onto the track lane that is assigned to the Vaz instrument (out 1& 2), i see the dial appear. when i move the dial, i can see the corresponding movement of the sample position on Vaz…so that works!
What i want to do is to be able to have a dedicated track so i can draw in detailed automation of the sample position.
When i drag and drop the sample position parameter from the list view onto it’s own track (underneath the Vaz track) i’m no longer to use the dial to control the sample position. so, the dial always has to be on the main instrument track lane?
I’ve been able to create a track lane specifically for the sample position, and i’m able to draw in automation but when i hit play, the midi parameter doesn’t seem to ‘latch on’, and the automation that i’ve drawn in doesn’t work.
any help would be so greatly appreciated!
thanks a lot.

i think i just need to see a screenshot of someone’s bus send and return setup
Try loading the “Examples – busses” project. It shows a few simple bus setups. Also if you are using the latest demo version, the bus send/return tracks can now be automatically created with the options in the “new arrangement” dialog.
😳 great, i’ll check out the example-busses project. thanks a lot. i’m using the Free CM version, by the way. Which i must thank you for!

Hi, VM user here too 🙂
It’s quite easy to add automation tracks to VM in Podium. I’m Assuming you’ve already assigned CC’s within VM. In Podium click on the ‘Param’ tab in the track inspector on the left, then click on the little circular button which opens a list allowing you to create new midi parameter objects by CC#. Once you have created the CC objects you need, you can then add the parameters as sub-tracks to VM. Hope that’s clear…For more detail on parameter automation have a look at p70 in the manual.Mart.
thanks for the info. i’m glad to hear this can be done! though i’m having trouble locating this ‘little circular button’. When i click on the param tab, all i see is a device and mixer button. when i click on the device button, it only calls up Pitch Bend, Channel Pressure, Program Change, Modulation and volume. When i click the mixer but, it only calls up Level, Pan, Send. I don’t see any button that allows me to create new midi parameter objects by CC.
hopefully it’s not right in front of my face! thanks for the help.
fantastic!! thanks!

My bad. The error message contains the plugin name only if the crash occurs when loading the plugin in an arrangement.
If you remove the Monkeyage plugin, will the scan then complete?
Is there a website for this Spectral Monkeyage? It seems the official site is gone.
yes, if i remove the spectral monkeyage plugin along with haydnx plugins the scan completes. But i still get the ‘plugin has performed an illegal action’ message.
so, one of the plugs in my vst folder doesn’t agree with Podium. I’ll find it eventually….instead of scanning my whole vst folder for every project, i’ll just scan the classics series folder because i know they’re stable….then just add plugins one by one as i need them for that specific project….i suppose i’ll come across the disagreeable plugin at some point.
thanks.
correction! With the CM version–i tried to scan again. this time when podium freezed, instead of force quitting, i just left it open for a few minutes. After a few minutes being frozen, the same error message that i got in the demo version appeared:
‘A plugin has performed an illegal action. This may have caused memory corruption in Podium. it is recommended that you save any changes to your project as a new file to avoid overwriting your original project file with potentially corupt data. Finally you should restart podium to avoid further instability of your system’.
No other message appeared; no name and filename of the plugin causing the problem.
thanks.
@Zynewave wrote:
Btw. I just checked the code, and the name and filename of the plugin causing the crash should be mentioned in the error message.
in the CM version–i did get an error message for one of the haydnx plugins. After i removed that folder, the scan progressed up to the spectral monkeyage plugin. it didn’t give an error though. i was carefully watching the scan progress and Podium crashed upon scanning spectral monkeyage. i removed SM and rescanned. Now, during the scan, Podium doesn’t crash–instead it freezes and doesn’t show any errors. i have to force shut down podium at that point.
thanks.
@Zynewave wrote:
What was the last plugin displayed in the scan dialog? If you temporarily remove this plugin, does the illegal action dialog still pop up?
Well, remember this specific error message was with the 1.8 demo, not the CM version. I’ve since, uninstalled the demo version and reinstalled the CM version. If i remember correctly, with the 1.8 demo, the scan seemed to completely finish, then the error message appeared. In that same error message, it said something about saving and closing the project, then reopening it. I did this and the project opened fine with all of my plugins.
With the CM version the scan doesn’t complete and crashes Podium, no error message.
thanks.
@Zynewave wrote:
however, after the scan completes, i get an error message saying:
‘a plugin has performed an illegal action’
Does the message appear after the scan dialog is closed? Normally it is the last plugin written in the dialog that is the culprit.
yes, the vst scan seemed to finish before the message appeared.
