Now here’s a weird bit of news. It seems the chaps at Ohm Force have created a DAW, now in beta and free to try. And it looks extremely tame compared to their several VST plugins that verge on the bizarre both in design and sound.

Note in their comments that one of the big intents for this DAW is that it can be collaborative — if they desire, musicians and sound engineers connecting through some sort of forum or sign up and then working online together.

I’ve heard of that sort of thing talked about before. Perhaps its time has come. I’d be very interested hearing from others here of their thoughts on this and, of course, the new and still free DAW itself if anyone tries it out. I was shocked to see how professional it looks, considering the pencil scratchings this small clutch of designers calls their VST line.

If you like online software, take a look at these:

Soundation Studio is a online DAW.
Audiotool is a nice “big toy” to produce electronic music only.
The songs can be shared with other users.

A “classic” DAW in beta testing yet is Bitwig Studio:

These software springing up like mushrooms! 😀

“These software springing up like mushrooms!”

Isn’t that the truth! What’s more, updates on DAWs and plugins are starting to happen so often that I can hardly keep up with installing all this stuff.

The strange situation of Bitwig: it’s a clip-based DAW, very much like Ableton Live. The odd thing right now is they released what they are calling a “Beta” for testing that is so broken and incomplete that they quickly became one of the biggest industry jokes ever. It won’t handle 3rd-party VSTs, yet Bitwig’s own VSTs aren’t really functional yet, and half it’s other features aren’t working. I don’t know what they wanted all the signed-up testers to do besides turn it on and stare at it! It’s such a mess that I wouldn’t even call it an Alpha version as it is now. Very nice UI, IMO.
