Topic: Audio Input to MIDI Track Output — How?

This is the very last hurdle for me concerning Podium. And, yes, I can do this just fine in REAPER, but I’d really like to be able to do this using Podium. I’ve tried every trick and workaround I can think of, even followed the Podium Guide’s instructions regarding setting up plugins in the database, but may have missed something because the variables are dodgy and many in some cases. Here is the issue:

I now have collected a few of the very best plugins that do this reliably and stably; they take an audio input — guitar from an interface to Podium’s Audio In, then it goes to a track with a plugin that is designed to convert the audio into MIDI and output it to the track. Some plugins output only the MIDI; however, the majority also output audio. For example, Fretted Synth makes a guitar synth plugin called guitarsynSE. It outputs a synthesized guitar sound in audio on the left channel which can be muted if desired. On the right channel there is velocity control and sensitivity, and it outputs pure MIDI. There are several other plugins that output only MIDI.

In all cases, Podium refuses to record the MIDI output. WHY? I’ve tried MidiYoke and every trick I can think of, including making a second global instance of the plugin to run the MIDI onto a separate track. This is exactly what the guide tells me to do, yet that doesn’t work either.

So, first, I would like to know what the problem is. Next, I would really like a solution if anyone has one. Last, if this is a feature that needs to be added to Podium, how much work does that involve? I see his as having to do with Podium’s rather restrictive routing, so this is the reason I have been pushing for better routing.

Aside from a pre-count on the metronome, which I sorely need in order to record in a professional manner, this above is the only other feature I need in podium. I’ve solved any other issue so far, so it’s down to this — I want to be able to track MIDI and hopefully also drive a VSTi synth in real-time using the audio input of my guitar. Several other DAWs do this without a hassle, although not every. If this is too hard for Podium, I can stick with REAPER to continue with this, but it seems a shame.

I have always promoted the several other feature requests that our group came up with during discussion, but these two — the metronome pre-count and this audio to MIDI — are my personal feature requests.

Has anyone tried this and found a solution? In REAPER and most other DAWs, you just choose the type of output you want. In this case, you choose your input just like Podium has, BUT for output you choose ‘record MIDI output’ or something quite similar.

I’ve never used any guitar-to-MIDI plug-ins before, but I just tried it out.

The MIDI output of the plug-in you mentioned (GuitSynSE) is recorded, but on the track the plug-in is inserted on. This is not the track you see in the track list!

I guess the trick here is to know how Podium’s track hierarchy works, which might be not as obvious if you haven’t been around through the many changes of how it is displayed in the track list.

In order to get to the recorded MIDI sequence, you have to show the effect track in the track list, so its events are exposed on the timeline. You can do this by un-checking the option “Hide Track Lane” on the effect selector’s context menu (available in the mixer, inspector, and the track header [if enabled there])

    Please see (click) this screenshot:

I can’s speak for how well the plug-in works, but let me know if you need any more help setting it up! 🙂

Whoa! So your saying I’ve got a track hiding there that I’ve never been aware of?! I’ve got to go check this out! Thanks!

(Funny if true — because I’ve been trying all this elaborate stuff with zero visible results!)

Also remember to select the “enable recording of VST plugin MIDI output” option in Preferences/Plugins.

This method won’t route the MIDI realtime to a VSTi, but at least you can get to the recorded MIDI and move it to a track with a VSTi.

Thanks, both of you — that was the solution. Actually funny that in all the various instructions from the different plugin makers, talk about how various DAWs either won’t do it or at best do it differently, and all my attempts at routing things and workarounds, and looking high and low that I never saw that little checkmark next to ‘hide track’! I don’t think there was much said directly in the Guide either. In any case, its fixed now! And now begins the endless struggle for proper sensitivity and tracking! Yea!

Oh, and most of the plugins will run their own parallel synth-filtered track, so I will have a pretty good idea of how a different synth will phrase and play when plugged in to the MIDI track later.

So cool and glad not to be stuck on REAPER doing this. So, of all the plugins I collected that supposedly will do guitar audio-to-MIDI, half of them don’t work really at all and another quarter of them don’t work well enough or leave glitches and lots of trouble behind. But a couple of them are just marvelous. One of them produces decent synth audio while it’s laying down the MIDI track. This lets me understand how it’s going to play out when I drop in a better synth on the finished recording pass. Even though I’ve got my keyboard skills back after many years of no use, I can still do parts faster with guitar, and the guitar styles of playing sound incredible when converted to full synth later. It really sets things apart and adds a unique flavour to the lines. I should have set this up long ago — too much fun.

Thanks again, chaps. You found the one issue I’d overlooked.
