    I understand Podium supports Win 98SE ?
I downloaded and installed the 1.10 demo on my (win 98) machine but it won’t start
The error message is ‘a required dll file, msimg32.dll was not found’

It should run on Win98SE. I know one of my customers are using this OS.

Are you running a complete Windows 98 install or are you using one of the unofficial ‘lite’ modifications? Or maybe you omitted to install some components such as Internet Explorer? I searched microsoft.com for ‘msimsg32.dll’ and found the link below, which states that msimg32.dll should be on the Windows 98 install CD.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;188433

This is one of the reasons why the Podium installer is relatively small. I have not embedded any system dll files that are supposed to be part of a standard Windows installation.

I hate to give advice such as ‘Reinstall Windows’, but this comes close. You could try to extract the msimg32.dll file manually from the W98 CD and put it in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder, but this may not be enough. Running Podium again may show a new error of another missing dll.

    you can download it here

On my system it’s in Windows/System32

    Thanks for the tips fellas.

I downloaded that dll file and put it where all my others dlls are in windows/system. Unfortunately just as Fritz suggested there was then another problem, to the effect that msimg32 was calling a supposedly missing dll ‘gdi32:gradientfill’ . I do however have gdi32 already, and I can’t replace it with a version from the dll-files website as Windows tells me that the file is in use. So…I tried buying one of those pc repair programs -PC Rescue which claims to fix DLL problems – it found and repaired 120 miscellaneous problems but I still have the same error starting Podium.

Funny thing is I haven’t noticed problems running any other apps (yeah thats what they all say) ; just the occasional blue screen of death which I always thought was one of the charming foibles of Win 98.

So I guess you’re going to say ‘its time to Reinstall Windows’ πŸ™

I would not recommend trying to overwrite existing dll files, such as the gdi32.dll. That’s only asking for trouble.

Using google I found a page that says: “MSIMG32.DLL exists in different versions for Windows 98/NT and Windows Me/2000 platforms. When installing the wrong file various problems might occur.”

Try checking the properties of the msimg32.dll file you downloaded. The 98SE version should be: 53,248 (bytes) 4-23-1999 10:22:00p

Yes but windows 2000 or XP πŸ˜‰ (if you should have the cash … it’s worth it)

Thank you for your help with Win 98 problems. I had no luck and decided maybe it was time to install a dual boot system so I now have Win 2000 as a 2nd OS. However..
I installed the demo while logged in as administrator, but when logging back in as a ‘power user’ to run it I get a grey screen when opening the freebees arrangement (similar to problem described in the post from tcp2000). It will work OK if logged in as administrator but the Windows literature suggests that its not generally a good idea to do everyday tasks as an administrator (?).
If I uninstall and log on as a ‘power user’ to install, it goes OK until near the end when it says that I don’t have sufficient privileges to ‘install the program for all users’ and it cancels the installation.

    Hi,

I’m sorry to hear you’re running into so many problems πŸ™

It should be possible to install Podium when logged in as administrator, and still be able to use it when logged in as other users. You just have to do a little trick:

One of the things the installer does is to create a Zynewave/Podium sub folder tree in the ‘Application Data’ folder for the current user. All you need to do is copy this folder tree from your administrator account into your normal login account. If using W2K, then this path would typically be at:
    C:Documents and Settings[user]Application DataZynewavePodium

When Podium is starting up, it expects to find this folder, which it uses to store setup files and audio cache files. That’s probably causing your problem with the empty editor windows, since Podium will not find the setup file. For the future I’ll put in some code in the Podium startup routines that automatically creates the Zynewave/Podium folders if not found.
