Well the title says it. Some – and it seems not all, as Conquistador is quite happy with Vista – fight with this bloated OS instead of making music. I just had – besides horrible performance and a bunch of bugs I never had before – a problem to get the still great DR008 from FXpansion to work. It didn’t work with Vista. As it is still available and dead cheap – you get a great drum-VSTi with a whopping 3GB of excellent kits and samples to use with, and you can easily load and tweak your own samples, just a nice product! – here is the bug and how to avoid it. (I read this at the FXpansion forum, but thought Angus from FXpansion wouldn’t mind if I tell it here)

You have to deactivate UAC (or for germans: Benutzerkontensteuerung). That is the thing that asks you every time if you want to execute something if you REALLY want to do it, and can be helpful for people who like to install stuff that they don’t know, but can get a bit tedious – and it can make vstis like DR008 not to work….
If you see a “can’t find any wizards, did you configure DR008 right?” message, you ran into the bug.

So here’s how to avoid it:

–>start –> run (ausführen in german)
    type msconfig.exe
(you’ll of course be asked if you REALLY want to do this, but if you want this will be the last time;-))))

–>go on, and find TOOLS in the msconfig-window (on the right)

you have to scroll down to UAC or “Benutzerkontensteuerung” in german – and you deactivate this.

Then you have to reboot, and hurray! Dr008 works now.

Additionally, first time on a Vista machine DR008 asked for re-registration at every startup of a sequencer…. this bug is gone too after deactivating UAC.

There is a useful tool that does the trick for you without msconfig.exe… You can find it HERE. This tool, which has not even to be installed, makes it possible for you to temporarily disable UAC – if you like it and just want to use some vstis:) – deactivate it like I did, or not deactivate it:). Use at your own risk, as always, but I tested it and it works.

In XP of course you don’t have to find workarounds, as XP works well with not only DR008. I really hope Vista will grow from the current beta-status it at best has for *some* machines.
And being a nearly-monopolist – you can’t even buy a laptop in a shop that is new and has XP professional on it here (only very old and overpriced machines) – that is simply a bad thing.

Well, DR008 works now. And thanks to the great render-bounce-freeze 🙂 functions in Podium I can at least enjoy the power of a Pentium III from 2001 with my spick and span new and fast laptop and its -for me – at the moment more than lousy OS.

    Hi Klemperer 🙂

He he…well I can only speak of my experience which is very good frankly with Podium on Vista. I hope also the Vista tips , guides and tricks for professional Audio usage e.t.c that I posted in this thread (page 1) can provide a more pleasurable experience for you and other users when using Vista.

Sorry if you did already mention this in your post but if you right click on the installer for an application and choose “Run as Administrator” *before you install it* that should also avoid an issue where an app requests re registration everytime it starts up.

DR008 is a lovely plug but I would have thought as a host Podium can only go so far before it really is the plugin’s fault, especially as the DR008 is a very old plug (with no Vista support yet unless it has recently been added).

I know you are not blaming Podium I am just thinking aloud here 😛 in any case Vista is remarkably capable of supporting XP apps and even some Windows 98 apps based on my experience.

I use an Echo Audio Product and their Vista drivers are excellent.

    Hi conquistador,

I just understood your posts right:-), and for me it is worthwhile to read because I get more than lousy results with my 10 days new laptop… The DR008-problem is gone, and your trick is even better (Angus from FXpansion explained the one I told).
My additional grieve is (Edirol UA25 as my old laptop was USB1.1, and an external usb2 HDD because the old had just 20GB HD;-)) that every 3 days or so NI-products de-activate themselves…. Grrrr…. I don’t know what it is. NI support said it is a VERY rare problem people have in Vista, indeed VERY rare. They said my machine seems not to generate an ID that isn’t changing. (???). Well i own soundforge and the challenge response, bad as it is, didn’t de-activate itself…

So I seem to have a fast machine (not 64bit or so of course) that gives me poorest results. And nobody has any help.

    1. shop: won’t take back the machine even in the first 14 days, because there is no hardware failure or CD-drive damage.

    2. NI: says I should re-activate again and again and send the files so that they could see what this more than strange problem is. That means you lose numbers every time, that is the only sense of “Challenge response”.

    3. HP support said: do a fresh install of the whole laptop and wait for
Service pack1. They said it was “3rd party problem”, NI, but I can’t even listen to music without crackles. And benchmark tests, chkdsk, “pc health tests” from HP themselves and so on show now mistake. There is a known Vista-bug that lets a “6to4” adapter not install, but that surely has not much to do with my problems.

all in all I got a new machine with nice specs, no virus, no trojan horse, that can’t run audiosoftware and de-activates my most expensive products. I just don’t want to bash vista, I would quite to the contrary wish it would be silently working. Sure, after 127 show-stoppers I tended to wish I had a working machine with Vista. Now I can’t do anything, every support leads me to the next, and nothing works. At least for internet and writing this is a nice machine:-(((. And I learnt, and indeed DID learn much, from various websites and from your really nice recommendations, Conquistador, what Vista is and how to make it fast. I just can’t see success following the – and I mean this – good advice.

cheers, and well, at home in 2 weeks I can go on making music and won’t write about bugs in software 😀 .

DR008 works well in Vista, after the UAC has been deactivated. So it is vista-compatible, and I think it is very good and still a bargain, so I mentioned it, mate. I think Podium is a wonderful software and so great for the money, so after some KVR-related mistakes (I thought I REALLY needed this, and this vsti…he he) i learnt that working stuff that is great is what musicians need. Be it older or the new hype and new.
