I am particularly confused at the moment. I’ve not done any “serious” work in Podium since, um… 1.96 (maybe?) and I can’t seem to seem to figure out how to insert an insert effect (Fabrik C compressor). Can anyone clue me in?

Need more details. Are you confused because there has been a change in the UI since the last Podium release you worked with?
Hi Frits, yes, that’s my problem. In fact, I just realized that I hadn’t imported a single plug-in!
