What does the latency number represent that appears on the mixing console? I know what latency is but I see a number of 960 apearing here and I can’t correlate that to anything meaningful.

I have asio set for 256, and I can hear no real apparent delay, so what does 960 really mean?

A lot of VST plugins works with a little delay. And if you connect the external hardware to your computer, of course it will work with a delay also. Podium can automatically compensate it. The ‘latency’ shows you total delay for the channel, compensated by Podium (in samples).

If you don’t need this info, just press “latency” button in the left side of the mixer to hide it.

What Max said. The value is mostly for diagnostic purposes. The largest latency value is deciding for the amount of delay there is when you start playback. E.g. the SIR convolution reverb adds a latency of 8192 samples, which is a noticeable latency.
