    Hi Frits,

Typically I respect your planning for updates and we usually get a lot more than we expect with each one so I try to avoid feature requests.

That said, I would very much appreciate it if the “Load Project from Template” could behave more like the “New Project” function.

It all works but the Projects folder ends up a mess. I would like the “Load Project from Template” to prompt for the new project name and create a folder for the .pod file and arrangements with that name, again, like the “New Project” function.

The Device Templates are fine πŸ™‚

With “Load Project from Template” do you mean the “Project > Project Templates > New Project” submenu?

Using this function will set the initial folder and filename to the name of the template, as displayed in the “new file” line in the project panel on the start page. If you open the properties dialog and enter a new name for the project, then that name will be set in the “new file” line. Only when you save the project the first time, is the project folder and file created.

Do you want the project properties dialog to automatically pop up after you create a new project from a template?

    Yes, that’s the one.

Okay, but somehow the result I get is that once saved, the .pod file and the arrangement folders appear one level under the Project folder (ie. z:Zynewave Podium Projectstest_from_temp.pod and z:Zynewave Podium Projectstest_arrangement_one), and not in their own Project folder?

The behaviour you describe above is what I expect should happen.

I guess my main concern is projects/arrangements being overwritten. Could this happen if I save the new project and forget to rename it first?

Probably a good way to approach it. I can’t think of a situation where I would want a new project (from template) to have the same name as the template.

I just tested it, and the project folder is created as expected. Are you saying that when you save the project, it is not saved in the folder location specified in the “new file” line on the start page? I hope you’re using the normal project save and not the “save project as” command?

I guess my main concern is projects/arrangements being overwritten. Could this happen if I save the new project and forget to rename it first?

It should not be overwritten. The folders/sound files will have a serial number appended, if a file with that name already exists.

I can. If for example you have created a template called “Sketches”, then each new project you create on that template will be called “Sketches”, “Sketches_01”, “Sketches_02” etc.

hmmmm …now it is creating the folder πŸ˜• Where’s LiquidProj3ct when you need him? πŸ™„

I’ve noticed that the Project folders will auto version due to Windows not liking two folders of the same name at the same level, but the Project Names in Podium’s Recent Project List would be Sketches, Sketches, Sketches unless you change the Project Title to match.

But that’s just splitting hairs really, it’s pretty intuitive to manage.

If the program creates the folder for the .pod file and arrangements then that’s the desired result.

May the best thing to do would be to disable the “Save Project as…” πŸ˜‰

I’ll change that eventually. Probably I’ll just show the filename in the recent list.

This is why we need a “save arrangement as”

(but don’t get rid of “save project as” since at the moment it’s all I have to save versions of work in progress)

Nah I was just making lite of the fact that “Save Project As…” seems like the right thing to do but doesn’t set things up as well as “Save Project”.

(Save Project seems downright dangerous due to the fact that all filenames are the same ….a leap of faith?)

I would suggest the pop-up dialogue raised by Frits earlier in this thread however that kinda goes against Podiums work flow of not creating the folders until the project is saved. A feature I like due to the fact that if a new project is not worth saving, you can start a new one or close the program and there are no files and folders to clean up.

I’ve made this change for 2.21:

The name entered in a project or sound properties dialog is now linked to the filename. When a new project is created, the project properties dialog shows “Project name (used as filename when the project is saved)”. When the project has been saved the name field is made read-only and the caption reads “Project name (same as filename)”. The same applies to the name field in the sound properties dialog.

Cool. Sounds like it will remove the ambiguity around file/project names.

    Thanks Frits πŸ™‚

What happens if I wanted to change the name of a project, as I often do when I wantto write something but have no title for it at that time and just write a temporary one?

What happens if I rename the file? Does it change the project name as well, then? If so, does nobody want the ability to save different project and file names? What if, for instance, I wanted to use a colon in my project name? What happens then?

Well, :(, those are some of the reasons why I originally made it possible to have project and sound names independent of their filenames. But unfortunately this flexibility has frequently been a source of confusion. Most people don’t want to maintain two names for the project, and so often ignore the project name, which in turn leads to the confusion when working with several revisions of a project.

Renaming the project/sound files will change the project/sound names.

Do you feel this simplification is a step in the wrong direction? Other users care to comment?

Yes I think it might be – that’s a good point and I also raised some doubts in the other thread – I think what is needed is not for the Project name to follow the filename (as many people would prefer descriptive project names anyway) but when you “save as” for it to ask to name the Project when at the moment it just asks to name the file (I presume when you create a new Project the filename follows the project name – it should not really be the other way round).

What should probably happen is when you want to save a Project with a new name is it brings up a version of the Project Properties dialogue.

Maybe I have missed some of the points here (sorry) but I like the current set up for Projects and I think it works well…

But I would not mind the simplification you suggested Frits, however I am not sure I would want a filename change to also change the name of my Project/s though. Should be the the other way around.

I also still think having an arrangement (save as) option would help. Podium needs that IMO. Perhaps a topic for another thread.
