i know i sound stupid. how do you copy a loop in a track? in reaper i just go to the edge of the loop and hold down the mouse and drag copies of the loop. ids there a similar way? i know ctrl c ctrl v but they don’t line up and it’s seems a little time consuming.

When you say loop, you probably mean to repeat an exact pattern. You can do this with so called phantom copies. Either hold the ALT key while dragging an event, or even simpler, select the event and press the INSERT key (above the arrow keys on your keyboard). Just press it as many times as you want to repeat the event – the copies that appear are aligned with the previous event on the timeline.
Phantom copies will have a “+” sign next to their name, and when you change something in either one of them, the change will be reflected in all phantom copies. To make a new unique event out of a phantom copy, right-click it and select Clone from the menu.

There is nothing like phantom copies In Reaper, I believe. On the other hand, the way that looping an event works in Reaper can’t be reproduced in Podium.

thank you! this is the nicest forum i have been on! reaper is sometimes snarky in their comments they expect everyone to be very computer versed. i’m older and just want to record music not be a computer tech guy.

    alt+drag doesn’t work for me, only ctrl+drag – am I missing something?

or even simpler, select the event and press the INSERT key

    +1, even easier 🙂

You need to first start dragging the event and only then hold ALT – the Windows shortcut icon will appear next to the cursor, as opposed to the copy icon.
You’re right that holding ALT and then clicking doesn’t work. That is configured to resize events without using the handles at the event’s start and end points (or in the note editor: when you want to resize notes while using the select tool).

I see what you mean now, though I’m not sure if the OP wanted a phantom copy or a unique copy. Either way you get an exact copy of the original, it’s just in the subsequent editing that there is a difference. I wonder if Frits should change it to ALT, then click/drag so it matches the Ctrl+click behaviour?..

what’s the difference in copies and phantom copies? can they both be edited?

Any edits made to a phantom copy of a midi or audio clip will have the same affect in all its copies. A unique copy can be edited in isolation.

If you don’t intend to edit the individual clips that you want to duplicate, then I recommend you use phantom copies. In the case of sound clips it will save a lot of memory and file space, since you only have one instance of the memory/file that is shared among all phantom copies.

The difficulties with the dual functionality for Alt+Drag has come up before. I think I’ll change it so that Alt+Click+Drag does not start a resize action in the arrangement editor. You’ll then have to click the small square box at the bottom right of an event to resize it. By removing this feature, Alt+Click will now start a phantom copy drag no matter if the alt key is pressed before or after the click. This will make it behave similar to the Ctrl+Click dragging for unique copies. Does anyone object to that change?

I’m not sure what Reaper does. From your question I gather that when you alt+drag in reaper, it will insert multiple copies of the loop if you drag beyond the length of one loop? That’s the old style that I think the Acid application first made popular. It doesn’t quite work like that in Podium. The fastest way to insert multiple phantom copies of a loop, is to select the sequence/sound event and then press the Insert key for each repetition. When dragging in Podium you either move the event or hold a key to copy the event (alt for phantom copy and ctrl for unique copy).

Doesn’t Reaper support clone/ghost/phantom copies of sounds/sequences? If it does, then how do you drag normal copies versus ghost copies?

reaper does copy acid’s way of loop duplication. there are no phantom copies at all in reaper. the insert button is great. podium seems to be a wonderful program i want to commit to this daw and become verse in it. i will probably be bugging everyone on this forum with questions. you’ll have to forgive me i’m older than most here i assume (52) and i was out on the road playing instead of learning the computer!
