I’ll apologize ahead of time for my newbie questions. I hope someone can get me over the hump since I’m highly trainable!

I have just installed the demo version and have set up a project. I am just using my on board laptop sound card (Gateway mx8711 laptop, 3 Gig ram, 1.6 Ghz, Sigmatel Audio, Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth for midi out, Windows wave/MME with generic high definition audio out ). I have a Digitech GNX4 that I want to hook this up to if I all goes well.

For my first project, I dragged in two midi files. No problem. When I go to play them, I get NO sound. I am assuming I need to assign an “instrument” and/or midi channel to the track? What and How do I do that? Do I need a “VSTi” plug in? I know …..sounds dumb. FYI – I did not import any VSTi’s when I did the initial install but I do also have Sonar Home Studio 6 XL……can I use the VSTi’s and instrument sounds from that application for use with Podium?

Also, is my low level generic laptop sound card preventing me from getting any playback? If so, what is the best cost effective solution? My goal is a portable DAW to use to develop backing tracks for my live acoustic Duo gig.

    Hi,
    Yes you need vst plug-ins.
Not sure about whether you can use the ones with sonar home studio sometimes vsts packaged with other programs are made so thay only work with the app you are using.
You can get lots of free vsts (search posts on this forum for links to free ones)
Laptop sound cards shoudl play back OK but for lower latency (Latency=delay between when you press keys on midi keybord and when the sound actually comes out) and recording audio, you can get cheap audio interfaces (I use edirol ua-1ex)
    Cheers,
    (And happy new year!)

As already said your laptop soundcard should work but you may achieve better results by using an ASIO driver (device). If you have problems with latency you should try the ASIO4ALL driver (http://www.asio4all.com/).
Install, Podium->Setup->Midi/Audio Interfaces-> choose ASIO devices and select ASIO4ALL.
If u need an instrument try Zynewave Nucleum (http://www.zynewave.com/files/Nucleum095.zip). Just copy that to your vstplugins folder (can be defined in podiums setup). If it is properly scanned you can select this instrument as track source.

btw. the GNX4 is an ASIO capable sound device. It can be used as external sound card.

Thanks, Mike G and Ronin for the excellent tips. I will try the vst plug-ins that you suggest.

Regarding the ASIO4ALL driver, is this a generic driver that works across many devices?….I will follow up in the link you’ve provided.

There are a lot more out there but these plugs may get you started.

Yes, it is. Maybe u should check out the GNX4 manual. As far as I know it has a built-in soundcard and ASIO drivers available. You can hook that up to your computer and connect speakers to your GNX4. I have a G9.2tt that works this way….but to be honest I don’t use it as interface.

Thanks Ronin. BTW – I downloaded the Zip file suggested above (http://www.zynewave.com/files/Nucleum095.zip) but when I went to extract the files I got a message saying the compressed Zip files was invalid.

I think you are right about the GNX4 as an audio/midi interface although I haven’t tried that just yet. To be honest, my first “mini project” that I wanted to accomplish (since I have not used a DAW much before) was to use an existing midi file to drive virtual instruments and then render a WAV file all in the s/w world. This seems to be much more difficult than I expected since I haven’t even been able to get any sound out of my sound board yet.

I just checked, and the download works fine for me. Try to download the file again. You may need to clear your browsers cache, depending on which browser you use.

To get going, I recommend you follow the getting started chapter in the guide, before trying with MIDI files.

    http://www.zynewave.com/wiki/doku.php?id=guide:getting_started

If you try this, then let us know where you encounter problems. That may give me some clues on how to make the getting started chapter more comprehensible.
