I’ve noticed that creating notes in the note editor with the pencil tool is a little off. For example, if I’m quantizing to 1/8ths, but click in the 2nd 16th note division, I’d expect the note to be quantized to the 1st 8th note position. However, the note created is actually quantized to the 2nd 8th note. Which does to a certain extent make sense, because quantizing is rounding it to the nearest note, but I’m fairly sure all other music applications truncate here, not round.

It’s only a very minor thing, but perhaps it would be nice to have an option as to whether creating quantized notes are truncated or rounded to nearest.

Oh, I’d also like to mention just how fantastic the embedded editor is. I loved the ‘one window’ paradigm of Tracktion, but overall found the GUI quite fiddly and slow. Podium’s implementation of this integrates so seamlessly into the interface, it’s streamlined my workflow like you wouldn’t believe! Great job!

I was not aware that other hosts commonly always truncate. It just feels natural to me, that painting a new note with quantize snap on will snap it to the same position that you would get if you painted with quantize snap off, and then selected the quantize edit command. I originally implemented the truncation method, but it frustrated me that clicking just one pixel to the left of the gridline would paste the note at the previous gridline. I always try to hit gridline that I want to place a new note at, even when I have quantize snap on. Also the cursor display in the top toolbar will show the note position that will be snapped to, with a -/+ percentage deviation.

    Thanks 🙂

This does seem logical, but I’ve checked Reason, Energy-XT and Tracktion 2. All of them truncate when painting with snap on but round when quantized. I guess it is inconsistent, but to me at least, it feels ‘right’. I imagine the inconsistency arises due to the fact that ‘snap’ is for those who prefers to compose with a mouse, and ‘quantize’ is for those who compose with a midi keyboard.

Wow, never noticed that before, that’s very handy!
