The font used in the Podium UI can now be customized. The font size will also scale according to the customized button size. It turned out to be a bigger job to implement this feature than I expected. There were a lot of places in the code that needed to be updated so that it scaled to the font size. I also had to redesign most of the graphic button images, to make them scale to a larger button size. I’m glad I did it though, as the recent resizable button feature was of little use without the resizable fonts.

After having worked for a while with a larger font size, I’m finding it hard to go back to the default minimum button size. It seems so small now :-k. Let me know what button size you prefer. I may change the default setup to a larger button size.

I’m not finished with the font size adjustments. For example, the zReverb editor is not yet scaling to the font size. I’m also going to update the tool button images. The current ones get a bit blurry when scaled to a larger button size.

Let me know what you think of the many small graphic adjustments.

    Beta1 changelog:

Added font selection settings to the Appearances page in the preferences dialog. The font name can be entered directly in the text field or selected with the font dialog opened by clicking the browse button.

Added “scale font size to button size” percentage setting to the Appearances page. Entering 0% will keep font sizes at the minimum size no matter how large the button size is.

Revised the graphics of the page tabs at the top of the project window and in the track inspector panel headers.

For now I think I’ll stay with the smallest button size on the desktop PC. I’ll check it out more thoroughly once I get to my laptop…

    – It seems Podium only really uses the font name (like it says) from the standard font selection dialog that opens… It would be nice if at least the minimum size to use could be specified as well, especially if the user sets font scaling to 0%.

    – The +/- icon replacement looks out of place to me, and even more so in combination with the “tree” lines and slightly oldschool folder icons. But I don’t know what else you might have planned to change. πŸ˜‰

    – It seems you slightly decreased the size of the S on solo buttons, and the letters on small selectors (BEX) while redrawing them…? Makes the E in particular a little fuzzy, compared to previous versions.

    – Love the new pin icon, tabs, inspector panel and editor/mixer headers. I could list a few more places that would look nice with a soft gradient like that. πŸ˜‰

Also, as you know from my constant complaining about this (), most icons become invisible if you use both bright text and bright selection colors (or both dark). As you’re working on them now, maybe it’s the right time to take care of this.

    Nice changes Frits.

A default button size of about 21 works *very* well here at a resolution of 1900 x 1200 on a 24 inch screen. Anything below that and the text (in the mixer) is a bit fuzzy. But the “21” setting results in sharp clear text. Higher settings also work well but “21” seems just right here so far.

Nice changes elsewhere. Especially the show hide icons. Not sure if the folders fit in with the UI any more as a result. Maybe they (folders) should only appear if there is more than one listing / item to hide or similar. :-k

Changing font size does not work here..

Beta2 is up. All plugin editors should now resize properly according to font size. Next up, I’m going to make the size of slider/fader knobs adjust to font size.

If you mean the font size setting in the font selection dialog, then that is ignored by Podium. I’m using the standard Windows font dialog, and I can’t hide the font style and size settings in this dialog. I don’t think it is worth the time to implement my own font selection dialog.

The font size is determined by the Default button size and Scale font size to button size settings.

By “show hide icons”, do you mean the new half-circle images for the old +/- buttons in the listboxes?

I’m not sure I understand. I assume you are talking about the folder icons shown in the file browser. Do you want those to disappear if the folder is empty? You wouldn’t know if it is a file or folder then.

Then, by all means, list the places. πŸ˜‰

Please refresh my mind with an example. The new icons I’m designing are all colorized with the text or selection text color. For example, the previous pin icon was a photographic image that wasn’t colorized, so it could be difficult to see with some bright color setups. I’m going to redesign the edit tool icons so they can be colorized as well.

Oh no, no… I need to restrain myself a little to not try and influence your artistic vision.
…Honestly, though, those are very nice gradients.

Hmm, are you sure it’s working correctly, then? The icons do not get colored over here:

(Active selection text color = red)

You removed the icons from most places outside of lists, so the remaining ones that can become hard to see are the tool icons and device type icons used in lists.
Also, the + icon on phantom copies still uses the active selection text color where it should use the one for inactive selection.

Font size etc. works fine here so far. I’m surprised how flexible the GUI seems to be. Nice work Frits!
I have seen a minor glitch where the new size for the scrollbars was not corretly set when “Apply” was clicked. Unfortunately I can’t provide a way to reproduce this yet.

    Yes.

    Correct.

Do you want those to disappear if the folder is empty? You wouldn’t know if it is a file or folder then.

I have not really given it too much thought and was just thinking aloud at the time. πŸ˜› So I am happy to leave it as is (folders) if you think that would be a better idea. I do like the “half circle” additions though and hope that addition will stay. πŸ˜‰

    Beta3 is up.

All the object icons have been redesigned so that they are unicolored. This means there shouldn’t be any visibility issues with different color setups. I’ve also fixed a lot of issues with the select and inactive select coloring various places in the UI.

Let me know what you think of the new object icons.

They look great overall, and I especially like how they look on dark backgrounds. 8)
The spacing on the left and right sides on icons in lists is a little off, though, I’d say. I also preferred the notes and waves to the new Ableton- or Propellerhead-ish arrangement/sound icons, but hey. πŸ˜‰

When you click anywhere to the left of a list item name and icon, its info is shown in the box below, but the item doesn’t actually get selected. This doesn’t seem new, but I only noticed it now… don’t know if it’s intentional.

Also, when you switch to the other display mode on the project page (I don’t even know what it’s called), the icons are not colored correctly when you select things.

I use white as color for ‘plugin editor’, but it seems the color is painted on top of the icons instead of the other way around, which means the icons on open plug-ins’ selector buttons disappear again when using a dark color scheme. I guess it may not be worth the effort to muck around with it any more just for a minor issue like this, though.

    Beta4 is up.

This beta includes some fixes, and redesigned tool icons. Like with the new object icons, the tool icons are now unicolored. Let me know what you think of the new design. The new select tool icon may be a bit cryptic :-k.

I plan to update the mouse cursor tool icons as well, to match the new pencil, eraser and scalpel tool icons.

    Very tasty looking UI πŸ˜€

…noticed something about the sliders though.

With the setting ‘Slider with value on knob’, the value isn’t centred (vertically) on the button.

The tool button icons look great, as does the midi indicator, browser and window min/max/close buttons.

    Ciao for Now.
