Just a question of curiosity. Do you prefer to use soundfonts or VSTis for playback of midi and why? What do you see as the pros and cons of each?

    uhhhhh
You kinda need a soundfont player to use soundfonts. Which come in VSTi form.

    Just saying 😆

Well, not necessarily. As far as I know, the format was developed specifically for sound cards (remember Sound Blaster?). Most people probably use VST or other plug-in instruments to load soundfont files today.

I think the point of the question is whether you prefer to play soundfonts on hardware or inside a plug-in, no?

I don’t know of any sequencers that can directly access a sound card’s soundfont player, send MIDI to it and receive audio from it.

Personally, I never use soundfonts anymore…

To clarify, I can load a VSTi such as DSK Overture or I can load sfz+ and into that, I can load a sound font.

So, I’m curious about the pros and cons of using a VSTi vs using sfz+ (for example) and sound font files. I’m curious about memory usage, processor load, stability, sound quality, availability of free VSTis and sound fonts.
