I don’t often post about freeware synths. I assume it’s usually more helpful to offer links to FX and processing VST freeware. But in this case, I’ve been thinking lately that sorely overlooked synth TS-Substance could use a bump.

This is really a quite lovely synth. To add to its charm, the skin was tastefully designed by my favourite GUI designer (aside from Frits!) who goes by the name ‘limeflavour’. It’s likely he has designed some VST/VSTi you own and use already.

The synth itself is a relative of sorts of the Juno family. Among these, TyrellN6 from u-he usually receives all the hype and praise, yet I truly like TS-Substance better. As someone pointed out once, the Spread control down in its Performance controls area behaves very much like the Phat knob on the popular DUNE synth.

Have a look and perhaps try this one out some time:

Thanks, I’ll check it out. I’m right in the middle of installing VSTs to my new computer…

Congrats on the new machine, kim! I just ordered a nice backlit keyboard (a gamer’s keyboard, believe it or not!) and a larger screen for the one I’m building. Can’t put it off any longer!

Yes, this synth is a real sweet one. The filters don’t get as dirty sounding as fast as Tyrell’s do. Very stable also. With so many oddball, even wild, synths in my folder, I keep this one around when I want something less extreme.
