Just installed Podium Free today. Looks very nice and quite powerful.

I do understand the need for limitations. I think you have THE best limitations-scheme of all ‘free versions’. I have one issue however; The single midi-in/out limitation prevents me from using my Tascam US-2400. As it emulates an MCU with two expanders (for 24 channels total) it needs three midi-ports.

This is of course not a very big deal. My main host is Reaper and I have used Orion for many years. I’m still using Orion as my sketchpad for composing but it is (currently) limiting me in several ways. Podium might fit the bill to replace Orion for me but to determine that I like to play with it for a longer time then the demo permits. So Podium Free could be the way for me to see where it can take me. I have other midi-equipment but I don’t mind to have only my midi-keyboard connected and then switch to control-surface to do some mixing.

So my suggestion (if feasible): create some option to have a control-surface use more then one midi-port while with other midi-controllers keep the limit to one port.

Not sure if this is possible, but I though to ask anyway 😀

Perhaps in a future version. I’m not going to change the limitations for a while though. I want to wait and see how well Podium Free is received in the communities. The more popular it gets, the more likely I am to continue with frequent updates.

The current limitations favour the users that have a simple MIDI/audio PC setup. For the users that work with a $1000 Tascam US-2400, I don’t think a $50 Podium license should be an obstacle. 😉

You have a valid point there of course, but it is a bit skewed; Not everyone that has such hardware does so because they can afford it easily. I had to save up for a long time, and limiting my expenses in many ways to be able to get one. I have a very nicely utilized home studio now, but it took me 10 years to get that stuff together.

Although I’m currently in the financial position to get a Podium license if I want to, I don’t buy something to see if it fits my workflow, and then just abandon it if it doesn’t. I do agree that a Podium license is fairly cheap, but it is still money 😀

    But as I said, it’s just a suggestion 😉

As Podium free is free, those that use this version certainly can’t buy a Mackie or Logic control, nor perhaps a BCF-2000.
But there are sofware applications such as GenMce that can run between your control surface and Podium, and emulate the MCU protocol :
Real midi controler -> mc emulator -> podium.
But then the emulator sends it’s translation to a virtual midi port, and podium use this virtual midi port.
Can this work ? because in the podium guide, it says that podium detects mackie compatible control surface : can a virtual midi port be detected as a valid mackie compatible control surface ? If not, maybe it’s easy to have a button that tell Podium that this virtual midi port is a mackie compatible control surface…
Hmm, do you see what I mean ?

For my knowledge, can someone explain me why mackie compatible control surfaces are listed in the midi-out in Podium ?

About the BCF-2000 : does it work well with Podium ?

Currently, Podium requires that a connected Mackie device responds to identity requests sent out on a MIDI out port. That’s why you have the Mackie option on the MIDI output port, since Podium will automatically link this to an input port when the Mackie device responds. Not all Mackie emulation devices responds to this identity request, so in a future update I’m going to make an option where you manually can select paired MIDI input/output ports, so that you can use all Mackie emulation devices.

OK, thank you for the reply.

I just want to say that Podium is awesome, so a big THANK YOU for this free version !

I don’t know if I will use it as my main DAW because of the lack of VST midi plugins support and midi controller support.

As soon as these features will be in, i’ll buy a licence.
