I got a crash on first run but since then it has worked fine though it keeps nagging me to resave my projects

As I said, perhaps someone can discuss real-world examples of where anticipative causes real troubles, and what those troubles are.

This is very interesting and maybe warrants a thread on the Reaper forum too. I knew how Anticipative processing worked (I think Digital Performer on Mac does something similar only they call it “pre-rendering”) but I thought that was a good idea – now, for the sort of workflow I have, I’m not so sure, and it might even account for some things I’ve noticed with some plugins in Reaper.

So let me get this straight – if the anticipative buffer is set to say 200ms then anything I do to the gui while playing in realtime (say tweak the filter cutoff) will be subject to 200ms latency? I just about do everything in realtime – i.e. I play instruments, often softsynths, and record as I go along using automation to capture expression (such as changes to knob positions using my mouse or NI Kore). I never compose using the mouse (though I might use the mouse to edit or tidy up afterwards). Would that scenario be affected badly by having anticipative on or would it still be be better than synchronous? As a player I want the lowest latency possible without compromising sound quality.

Also I’m wondering how this would affect things if I was using a DSP based instrument – I have a Virus Ti for example and have found that performance in Reaper is poorer with this than other apps but did not know why. I also have a Scope DSP system with several synths so what would be the optimal approach with them (again playing/recording in realtime) – Podium’s synchronous mode or Reaper’s anticipative or something else?

Hey that works 🙂 I suppose I could set up my default project with a marker set to say half an hour – would there be a downside to that? (not really sure what markers are for or why it makes such a difference)

In this case the marker is just a quick way of extending the arrangement length. You could have put any event on a track at that position to get a similar result. Don’t place the marker too far out though, as e.g. events on your bounce tracks will be set to this length as well.

Oh, I wouldn’t want that (I’d get a big audio file with loads of silence).

Still at least it sounds like you know how to fix this now yes?

Well I normally don’t have a plan in mind for how long I mean to play but I suppose I can err on the side of caution for now. How do I set a marker event? (I don’t use those normally)

Cool If it helps I’ve got a worse example here from this afternoon:

I was trying to automate mallet stiffness in Lounge Lizard to create a more organic feel but it wouldn’t even let me move off the zero for more than a second or two – every time I tried to get it where I wanted it to be it would snap back to zero – this time even though I was not moving to another param as in the example above – as you’ll appreciate I gave up as it was impossible.

I just did – NI Kore (midi and audio)

I didn’t think it was plugin related either.

Yes the main window is open (well opening) when it happens.

My interface is a NI Kore running on Win XP pro sp3.

I also have an Access Virus Ti installed so its ASIO driver is present on the system but I use the Kore as my driver in Podium (and most apps). Its a bit difficult to do the check you suggest because I could open Podium say 20 or more times and it not crash – it doesn’t happen often enough for me to be able to make a definitive connection with whether its the audio/midi interface or not (ie I might disconnect it and try opening Podium 20 odd times and not get a crash but that doesn’t mean it’s because of disconnecting it). How about error logging? Can it do that?

Yes that is how I always do it – I record as I play. Therefore I don’t (can’t) set the lane length in advance

I do have one Tone 2 synth (Firebird +) but its legit so I don’t see why it would be “phoning home”. Also it’s not happening on plugin scan (as Podium afaik doesn’t do a startup plugin scan except when the project is first created) I don’t have an open internet connection anyway on the PC I run Podium on (in fact it doesn’t even have Internet Explorer)

Ah now I see what I’m missing – ctrl L brings up the same as the “List” button but as a 2 pane view – what I see when I click “list” button is just what is on the right (ie the folder tree) but the left pane is there but you need to drag out the centre divider to access it – why it’s hidden away like that by default I don’t know.

Like I said though, when I click on list all I see is folders on my HD (inc the Podium folder) but no list of objects (or project object browser) so how do I access those?

    thanks
