I’m wondering if there is an official thread, timeline showing on what date function x is planned to be implemented. It doesn’t need to go too far into the future, maybe just a simple plan for the next 6 months or so?

    There is a future thread here… 😉

I think Frits very wisely tries to avoid giving specific dates for certain features to avoid breaking promises if he fails to deliver. I magine it would put him under quite a bit of needless pressure as well.

On average new features arrive every two – four weeks. Frits will also sometimes post screen shots of work in progress and ask for ideas on certain new features. Not always, but he has done this at times in the past here are just two examples…

1.Preview of the Sound event fade feature

    2. Preview of Device icons

You can serach through the future forum to find more.

I’d like to know if if there are functions like Timestretching planned at all, and if we can expect them in the next 12 months to be implemented?

Time stretching has been discussed and Frits has definitely confirmed he will look into implementing this.

    Have a look here…

What are the next features we’re looking into?

Frits usually adds features we ask for sometimes within a very short timescale. He will sometimes even say what is coming up next, but I think only if he feels ready to do so (maybe because he has almost finished the implementation of a new feature) then he will say what it is, but I don’t really think he will always say point for point what is coming up in the next update.

Of course that does not mean you cannot ask. 😉

It would definately feel like there is any development happening and some security to see podium is alive and healthy, and future versions to look forward to. The worst thing is if it feels like an abandoned product with no future hope and too slow development, which i think many people are scared of (like some other hosts).

Podium has been in development for 10 years! Really. Only the last 2 years or so has it been made public, so Frits has been working on it for a very long time.

As for Podium being alive and healthy, you might want to have a good look at the Releases forum and check the frequency of the releases, at least two to four weeks on average…sometimes one week.

There have been instances where it was just days between updates, although that is rare.

Frits likes to take his time to get things just right and IMO has got the balance between bug fixing and new features just right. Podium is very stable indeed. A highly reliable host IMO that has a very healthy development process.

I also noticed some kind of VST-Host-Race is going on. I might be wrong but i’m reading more and more every day that the big player Sequencers are loosing their users because of instability, too many bugs, upgrade prices or licensing problems (hardware dongles) etc… I think right now is as people are willing to change their hosts or at least try them out.
I’m just one on them although i can only speak for myself

Certainly dongles are seemingly a quick way to lose sales based on feedback on KVR. I am no fan of dongles either. Perhaps things are starting to change.

Certainly there are many people who are quite happy to look at a host like Podium and try something new. It certainly does not cost much considering the long list of features it offers for music production.

Yeah, I think that the embedded editor is probably better than an editor inside the arrange window.

While I would still be interested in an in place editor…considering the bigger picture with Podiums development it is far from essential.

The embedded editor is in some ways an in place editor alrready and can be very useful to use as an inplace editor that can be easily dragged out of view when not in use.

I can think of at least 3 features I would probably like to see in Podium before a dedicated inplace midi editor, to be fair. 😉 Nice to have not need to have.

The reason it doesn’t resize to the left, is because it cannot extend into negative time within the sequence/sound. To make this work, all events/waveform data within the sequence would need to be shifted along the timeline by inserting a blank segment at the start of the sequence, and this could affect other phantom sequence events referring to the same sequence. It is a more complex operation than just extending the tail of the sequence.

Well in your position as the developer you can always let us know how complex or easy something is to implement, it can certainly be quite interesting to read. 😉 I did not think it would be that complex to implememt in Podium.

Some day I’ll probably add support for it, perhaps by showing a dialog asking if you want to add the time at the start of the sequence/sound.

    Cheers Frits.

I also would like to have full example projects included with Podium. I just need to create zSynth, zSampler, zComp, zMaster…

That would be very nice 😉

I got the impression that eXT2 is mostly ready and testing can start (in three phases)

This I think has surprised many. It really did appear to be maybe a few weeks of testing or so and then by late Dec 06 or late January 07 it would have been ready, but it is sooooooo far off the radar at this point. My main use would have been as a VSTi in Podium.

Some estimates have a summer release for it. I think EXT2 is a total rewrite but thankfully Frits does not have to do that with Podium and although Podium features might not arrive as fast as some other hosts they are still very frequent and the development pace is just right IMO. 😉

I’m considering putting an alternative pair of drag handles halfway up the event sides. Dragging these handles instead of the bottom pair of handles will then scale the contents of the clip.

That does sound good. Should work very well.

Currently, it’s not possible to lenghten a sequence event to the left from the original size – it only works to the right.

Would be more logical and also useful if it worked both ways

    Good point.

Shift+Ctrl is the shortcut for selecting the vertical zoom tool.

But after thinking about it, I could change the behaviour to mimic the way selection works in standard Windows lists: If you hold control while clicking a file/icon, it’s only at the release of the button that the selection is toggled (if no drag action has been started). This way you can hold control and start a copy drag action without toggling the selection. Is that the way to go?

Yes, that does sound like a good idea. 😉

Implementing plugin MIDI out streaming will require several days of work, so I don’t consider it a minor feature.

No worries. You of course will know development wise better than we do from your perspective as Podiums developer. 😉

I have a small todo.txt where I write stuff I need to implement before starting on major features. It seems that every time I almost get this list erased, some issues discussed on the forum gets added to the bottom. It’s been a while since I last did something “fun”, so only bugfixes will be added to this list in the coming weeks.

Your choices have been pretty good to say the least so far, also I think we all want you to have fun doing what you do. 😉
