To Tele: Thank you, I look forward to any critique and comments. Criticism can only make me and my music better, so I gladly embrace it.

Regarding 24 bit, it is a rather controversial issue. There are people who claim to hear a huge difference between 24 and 16 while there are others who claim that it is the same thing. My opinion is that especially for ambient music it is better. It gives more headroom, allows for more dynamics. I like to keep my music quite soft and take advantage of dynamics – the loudness war is something I really despise.

In the end, why not offer 24 bit to people who want it? Storage is really not an issue these days, so I’d say go for it. At the same time, allowing people to also get mp3s is a good idea.

To adimatis: Thank you! Sure, I’m glad to share my tools/techniques. The instruments that I used were: Alchemy Player (I have the synth now though), Oatmeal and RhinoCM. Mostly Alchemy for pads, soundscapes, Oatmeal for synths, effects and RhinoCM for percussion, effects. I’ve also used Tal Dub delay, Classic Vsts, Ambience reverb. For mastering, I used UpStereo and Limiter no. 6. Those are all high quality, free plug-ins that I warmly recommend. Also, if you buy an issue of Computer Music Mag, you get a fantastic arsenal of tools for almost nothing.
Furtermore, I’ve also used a lot of field recordings and sampled sounds.

I’m very glad you guys liked my music. I finally managed to create a fb page and official page for the project, so now I’m trying to spread the word around.
People on this forum have been awesome from the beginning; I can honestly say that because of the positive response that I got from this forum I continued to keep on writing music. Now I am close to releasing my first commercial album (the second ‘Cryobiosis’ album).
    Thank you! 🙂

    Hello,

sorry for the (very) delayed response. I’ve been really busy with faamily and work problems. Honestly, I don’t feel like going through huge, lenghty processes of licensing my music allowing someone to use it (that is what I understood from the above links). I would rather just find an independent movie maker, talk to him personally and agree on details about the soundtrack.
Anyway, so far I have only posted mostly dark music here. Well this is my second project, ‘Luminosphere’. I’ve released the first album on the ‘Mahorka’ netlabel and it is available for free here: mahorka.org/release/093
I can’t really label it as one genre, but it is an ambient/chillout mix with a positive and maybe melancholic vibe.
I hope you guys enjoy it 🙂

Thank you for your kind words. I can’t dream of writing music for a game like Halo haha, but I would love to write the soundtrack to a small movie/game. It’s just that I really have no idea though how to get to someone who writes movies/games and would need a soundtrack.

    Hello all,

Just wanted to share two tracks of mine released as “Cryobiosis” that have appeared under 2 compilations on two netlabales: GV Sound and Cryo Chamber.

    Freezeout – http://gv-sound.bandcamp.com/track/freezeout

    Departure – http://cryochamber.bandcamp.com/track/cryobiosis-departure

I was quite honored to be included on the second compilation (Cryo Chamber) as I got to put my name along with well established dark ambient artists.

I’m also currently working on another album, totally different but more on that later.

I wouldn’t buy ProTools for anything in the world. I bought an AVID midi keyboard and it came with ProTools Lite or smth like that. It was so slow and troublesome. Podium blows it away.

But hey. ProTools is the “industry standard”. So that gives it a +500$ to its value.

Thanks a lot levendis for posting my music on your blog. It means a lot to me to see that my music is appreciated. I am planning to release within the next 1-2 months another project; I don’t want to say anything yet but it will be totally different music.

Stardust and Charsiesis seem to be very interesting plugins – I will take a look at them for sure.

Tele, are you sure we are talking about the same Melda plugins? Because as far as I could tell their free stuff was very comprehensive and I did not get any advertisement that urged me to buy their products. What products for mastering are you using now?

I have also been looking into commercial synths. I’m not sure why though, but u-he’s synths haven’t impressed me so far; I’ve tried only the free ones though. Tyrell, zebralette were good but not amazing imo. Of course, it is a matter of taste. I have bought the CM magazine recently and I’m really looking forward to trying out the synths & plugins related.

Well I hope you’ll like the album to the end. I’m not sure about movie scoring though – as of now music is a hobby for me (although I dedicate a lot of time to it). But I have 8 years of music theory and piano, so who knows. It’s just that the music industry right now is very hard to get into and there are a lot of really good musicians out there.

Haha I don’t want to dispel the magic, but I got a lot of helpful hints and useful advice from other people and forums so I think it’s fair that I share my “tools” as well.

Anyway, for synths I’ve used about 5: Oatmeal (the full pack, IMO it is the best free synth by far – I would spend 100 $ for it with all the presets, cool skins and the amount of features and sound quality), Alchemy Player (once again, amazing), Crystal, P8 Superwave and HG Fortune’s Protoplasm. I have found that all those cover all my sonic needs.

I’ve also used Sonatina SFZ – a fantastic free sampled orchestra. Also Equinox pianos – although this soundfont is a little hard to find on the internet. For drums I’ve used Drumatic. I’ve also used some sound samples from personal field recordings as well as some sound samples from Sound Radar.

As far as effects go, the Classic Series (from Acoustica) is very good; especially the delay, flanger, chorus and reverb. Also for the reverb I used Ambience. Other more “exotic” vsts were Camel Crusher and dblue glitch. Also, paul’s extreme sound stretch was very helpful for long, fluid textures.

Finally, for mastering Melda’s free plug in bundle is fantastic. Very transparent compressor, great eq, great surround plug in, a 10/10 imo.

Of course, at the heart of all songs is the amazing Podium. Seriously, I had no crashes, very fast workflow and a great interface. I think that covers about everything, if there are any other questions I’d be glad to answer them.

Multumesc mult Adimatis, planuiesc un concert live in iarna. Poate poti veni 🙂 In ce oras locuiesti?

I’m very very glad you guys liked it. Music for me is a hobby and an escape – I couldn’t live without it and I will always give my creations for free.

The tracks were created in a Stereo project in Podium (I’m not sure if I answered your question Levendis). However, I have used Melda Production’s stereo enhancer plug in – it really added a nice touch to the sound.

If anyone wants to know what other plugins I’ve used, I’d be happy to share.

I have finally released my music under the name “Cryobiosis”. It’s a little hard to define the genre, but I would call it dark/experimental ambient. If anyone is interested, the album is available for free at http://cryobiosis.bandcamp.com

Of course, all music was created using Podium as a DAW.

Thank you very much for the welcome levendis:)

I will post my songs for sure on the SoundCloud group but I need to finish them first and make them sound the way I wanted them to. My music is also pretty different from what I’ve heard around from other users: I mostly compose music for films and experimental/dark ambient.

    Mine are the following:

    1) MIDI support (or an apreggiator)
    2) Dithering (almost all DAWs have this)
    3) Some simple staff view

Other then those, I’m really satisfied & happy Podium.

Yes, I agree with you on both Reason and Reaper.
In my opinion, Reason is a little outdated – I have a friend who is learning it at school and he constantly tries to make me learn it as well. To be honest, I don’t see what the big fuss around it is. Yeah, it has some nice effects and some nice synths – but look at Sonar Studio for example. At half the price of Reason you get Z3ta, Rapture LE, Dimension LE and VST support. I’m not saying Reason is bad, but I don’t see it as good as it used to be. I prefer not having any native synths and having VST support.
Just think about Reason’s synths. Subtractor? It’s nothing special, seriously. Synth1, Oatmeal, TAL Noise Maker kick its ass. Malstrom? It’s ok but there is Crystal. Not quite the same, but still a good replacement. Now Thor is quite amazing but it can’t really compare to super synths like Alchemy or Omnisphere. I now they are not in the same league and it’s pretty stupid to compare them, but I’m just saying that Reason really doesn’t have anything top notch or special.
With Reaper it’s a different story but to be honest I think people are making a bit too much fuss about it. Yeah, it is a nice DAW but in terms of MIDI it can’t compare to Podium. Honestly, not many DAWs (from what I’ve seen) can compare to Podium.
Anyway, I really appreciate all your comments Telenator. You seem to be all over the forum giving good advice. Keep it up!

    Cheers,
    Cris
