Thank you for your help with Win 98 problems. I had no luck and decided maybe it was time to install a dual boot system so I now have Win 2000 as a 2nd OS. However..
I installed the demo while logged in as administrator, but when logging back in as a ‘power user’ to run it I get a grey screen when opening the freebees arrangement (similar to problem described in the post from tcp2000). It will work OK if logged in as administrator but the Windows literature suggests that its not generally a good idea to do everyday tasks as an administrator (?).
If I uninstall and log on as a ‘power user’ to install, it goes OK until near the end when it says that I don’t have sufficient privileges to ‘install the program for all users’ and it cancels the installation.

    Thanks for the tips fellas.
    🙂
I downloaded that dll file and put it where all my others dlls are in windows/system. Unfortunately just as Fritz suggested there was then another problem, to the effect that msimg32 was calling a supposedly missing dll ‘gdi32:gradientfill’ . I do however have gdi32 already, and I can’t replace it with a version from the dll-files website as Windows tells me that the file is in use. So…I tried buying one of those pc repair programs -PC Rescue which claims to fix DLL problems – it found and repaired 120 miscellaneous problems but I still have the same error starting Podium.

Funny thing is I haven’t noticed problems running any other apps (yeah thats what they all say) ; just the occasional blue screen of death which I always thought was one of the charming foibles of Win 98.

So I guess you’re going to say ‘its time to Reinstall Windows’ 🙁
