I remember testing with Waves plugins a long time ago. The selection box with Waves plugins are shown by the loaded Waves VST waveshell plugin. Only when you have selected a plugin in the list will Podium be informed of the plugin name etc. I think you need to import the Waves waveshell plugin several times, and each time select a different plugin in the popup box.

Can anyone give me (in laymans terms!) directions to set up an fx send/return that ANY track can use.

You work with busses in Podium the same way you work with plugins: You insert tracks with send mappings in the hierarchy where you want to extract audio. On one or more tracks elsewhere in the hiearchy you then add tracks with the return mappings.

If you are looking for a way to automatically have one or more bus sends preassigned for each audio track you add, then you can use track templates: You create a new track, wrap it in one or more parent tracks with bus send mappings assigned, right-click the topmost track in the chain you want to reuse, select “copy group to template” and give it a name such as “bus send chain”. When you next time use the “new track” menu the “bus send chain” is available in the submenu.

Still, to avoid confusion for Lawrence, isn’t it “conceptually” true that in essence you can add multiple FX to a single track (even though technically they may actually reside on separate FX tracks)?

You could say that you can add multiple FX to a single track lane. The hide track lane option was implemented to allow a series of plugins to appear as they are on a single track. A track with a hidden lane is used as a modular building block rather than being used to hold events on the timeline.

Podianers videos are excellent, but they do not cover e.g. the integration of external hardware, as one of my older videos do. So I’ll leave them up a little longer. There’s also a small note about the age of the videos below the video links.

    Hi,

    1. Either open a list window (Ctrl+L) or open the embedded list panel with the button at the top right corner. Resize the panel so you reveal the file explorer. Locate your wave file and drag it to a track.

    2. The bounce sound on the master track is a regular wave file, so you can use the save command in the sound editor file menu to save it to a specific location. By default it will be placed in an arrangement subfolder within the project folder.

    3. In these days with Vista replacing XP, I would say it’s important to go with a manufacturer that are updating drivers regularly and that will deliver Vista drivers for both 32/64 bit. For Podium it is important that there are ASIO drivers available, but I don’t know of a single soundcard that does not have ASIO drivers.

You can replace the plugin assigned to the track, as Bryan describes, but you can only have one plugin assigned to a track. When you want to create effect chains, add bus sends etc., you set up nested tracks.

Stability is one of my primary concerns. Feedback from users seem to confirm that Podium is stable, but there are of course systems where Podium will not perform well. With the plethora of plugins and soundcard drivers, it’s close to impossible to write a host that is stable under all conditions. So I recommend users try Podium on their music PC and check that it performs well, before they purchase a license.

The full version installer is not much larger than the demo version.

I’m not even sure what you mean by the event list i the track inspector.

The track page (shortcut: F5) has a listbox showing all events on the track.

It is my perception that the DX standard is slowly fading out in the audio industry. Steinberg dumped support for DX in their latest Cubase version. It also seems that there are very few new plugins released that are DX only. So the problem is mainly with older plugins which are no longer being updated by the developer.

There are some DX to VST wrappers available, but I have no experience using those.

is there anything else that comes immediately to mind that might be significant in the difference between Podium and it’s competitiors?

That’s a big question, with many possible answers depending on what you are looking for. Since you mentioned DX, I would also say that Rewire currently is not supported, but I plan to add support for it.

Now it seems like the spacebar is developing the same behavior

If you have key focus e.g. in the event list in the track inspector, then the space key is used to select items in the list (standard Windows behaviour). This is something I may change, as it has often annoyed me.

    Hi,

A good place to start is the “Getting Started” tutorial in the Podium guide. If you’d like a more passive introduction, take a look at the videos on the about page and the recent videos created by Podianer on the wiki/tutorials page. Note that the videos on the about page are quite old and not up to date with the latest Podium release.

    Hi,

There is no upgrade rebate for CM readers. I don’t think it would be fair to customers who already purchased at full price. So the price is the same for all.

what exactly ARE circular and linear knob movements?

The VST spec allows a host to set the default knob mouse drag mode in plugins. Circular means you drag with the mouse in a circle around the knob. Linear means you drag up/down to change the knob value. Not all plugins support changing knob mode.
