I’m going through the Podium Guide and updating bits and pieces as I go along. While doing so I’m making some minor changes to the UI to further improve consistency.

On that note, perhaps someone with a better understanding of the English language can help me out:

I’m looking for a simpler and shorter name for the “Arrangements & Sounds” panel on the project start page. When I at some point in the future add support for video, I don’t want to call it “Arrangements & Sounds & Videos”.

I’m considering: “Media Objects”, “Media Elements”, “Media”, “Contents”, “Creations”.

    Suggestions, anyone?

I would say Arrangements, Sounds and Videos; sounds weird to have two “and” words there. 🙂

“Media” is fine in my opinion. Adding Objects or Elements to it works as well, though it starts sounding a bit technical, or object-oriented, like it’s programming talk and not audio work. I have no other suggestions, however, even after consulting a thesaurus briefly.

My only concern with “Media” would be that I’m not sure if “Arrangements” really would be media. Video and sound are media, but arrangements are patterns of media.

Of course, if you changed it and turned arrangements into its own section where you could do pattern-based production as well, well that would solve it. 😀

Hi there, I’ve been checking Podium Free for the last few days and I’m actually impressed! It’s a fine host indeed and it seems to be getting better and better with each update. I did try an earlier version in the past, don’t remember how long ago, and I remember being mostly confused with the paradigm, but now it just clicked. I hope I’m able to get a license in the next few months.

Anyway, based on the above comments I think “Arrangements & Media” would be a good compromise, what do you think?

Keep up the good work and thank you for your generosity!

    Thanks for the suggestions.

So far I’ve renamed the old “Arrangements & Sounds” and “Devices” menu buttons to: “Media Objects” and “Device Objects”.

Anyone think this is a poor choice of words?

I’m out of office for the weekend, so I’ll be able to reply again monday evening.

The term “Project ingredients” makes me feel hungry (sorry andyy815) 😛

I like that. Short and descriptive.

I would rename the Devices menu button to something like this

    1. “Plugins and I/O”

    2. “Plugins and Input/Output”

    3.”Plugins and Mappings”

    4. “VST and I/O” >I quite like this one.< 5. “VST and Input/Output”

    +1 for “Arrangements & Media”

I’m not keen on “Device Objects”, it’s meaning isn’t all that obvious. I prefer Conquistadors suggestion “Plugins and Mappings”

I have to agree with everyone that there’s no way around mentioning “arrangements” explicitly… also, “objects” does sound a little programmer-ish. 😉

Brings me to a question: what do you use the “new sound” menu entry for, anyways? It doesn’t seem possible to record or do anything else besides drawing waveforms in the stand-alone sound editor.

If it were me, I’d choose some variation of “Plugins and I/O Devices” (or mappings) for the other panel.

These two seem like a good idea to me.

“Arrangements & Media” and “Plugins and Mappings”, I like those two as well.

“Arrangements & Media” and “Plugins and Mappings” are the ones I prefer.

While doing so I’m making some minor changes to the UI to further improve consistency.

When you create a new bus track by adding any new return in an insert track the default button is ‘No’, I think it should be ‘Yes’. Few times I did a mistake using Enter/spacebar key. It hasn’t too much importance, tho

You can record in the sound editor. But the “new sound” menu will only be useful in rare cases.

Seems like “Arrangements & Media” and “Plugins and Mappings” are the favorite. I was looking for shorter names, and I end up with longer names :-k

The reason I wanted shorter names, is to avoid having to write “the arrangements & sounds menu in the project start page” every time I refer to this menu in the guide, or on the forum.

I have a problem with “Plugins and Mappings”, because if you consider the purpose of the “device mapping” object, then plugins are also mappings.

    What about this solution:

The “Arrangements & Sounds” menu is renamed to “Contents – Arrangements, Sounds”. The “Devices” menu is renamed to “Devices – I/O, Busses, Plugins”. I included “Busses” because I assume busses are not generally classified as I/O? In this case I use “Plugins” as a general term for both ReWire devices and VST plugins.

That way I can refer to the menus as “Contents menu” and “Devices menu”, yet the button labels still show the more detailed description. Objections? 😉

I am a bit baffled by your response to be honest. 🙂 Surely it is more important for your users preference to be taken onboard for easier use of the application (in this case the terms /words used on those buttons) than for a personal preference you have for the names, just to avoid you having to type out an extra word in your forum posts for each button?!?!?!? :-s

Really IMO there is nothing wrong with the “Arrangements & Media” and “Plugins and Mappings” combo suggested. They offer short to moderate yet very good descriptive names for those buttons. I am somewhat puzzled by the problem you have.

Is typing out an extra word or two that bad? Just copy and paste 😛 Changing the words on those buttons to suit a forum or guide writing preference you have is a bit odd. They cannot be too long I agree. I think the suggestions made so far though “Arrangements & Media” and “Plugins and Mappings” are fine.

I have a problem with “Plugins and Mappings”, because if you consider the purpose of the “device mapping” object, then plugins are also mappings.

IMO I still see no real problem here.

    What about this solution:

The “Arrangements & Sounds” menu is renamed to “Contents – Arrangements, Sounds”. The “Devices” menu is renamed to “Devices – I/O, Busses, Plugins”.

Err…is that not even longer than the suggestions we (forum members) put forward on this thread?!?!? Now I am really confused.

I included “Busses” because I assume busses are not generally classified as I/O? In this case I use “Plugins” as a general term for both ReWire devices and VST plugins.

That way I can refer to the menus as “Contents menu” and “Devices menu”, yet the button labels still show the more detailed description. Objections? 😉

Nah…IMO I would use the suggestions made. It’s a simple thing that does not need to be overcomplicated. Bigger fish to fry in Podium e.t.c

But hey….that is my opinion. 😉
