    Hi Frits,
I would just say I am currently very happy with the workings of expanded mode and it gives a very clean and uncluttered UI for my projects, with many tracks hidden and the inspector open. I only brought up my issue with the inpector dials as it seemed relevant at this time.

For those that are concerned about the inspector changes: I have uploaded a beta of 1.96. You can download it from the download topic in the VIP lounge.

This beta also has a new color picker tool in the inspector, which allows quick adjustments to track colors.

Very nice! I like both the new detached inspector and the color picker.

That is a really lovely way to represent a colour picker. Beautiful! It is so easy to use as well. Utterly brilliant! It looks great, feels great…(probably smells great 😆 ) so simple a feature but wow! Very clever stuff indeed. Almost striking in it’s presentation. Frits…that is a superbly implemented feature. Seriously.

It may not be so big a deal to all, but should some of you wonder what is so good about this feature, here it is…

The look and feel and the way it is implemented is just great IMO. It is just so elegantly done. The design is lovely. Podium has so many nice touches of this nature. The striking look of the Colour picker is equally matched by the wonderful ease of use it offers.

The large Transport also fits into the screen fully here thankfully with the new Inspector tab open. That was an initial concern for me. But not any more.

Oh yes …I forget to mention this in the 1.95 release thread, nice touch with the “Instrument / Return” description in 1.95…I think that is about the best way to name it. 🙂

    Cheers Frits!

I’m sorry to say that, but this color picker is for me the last straw !

I don’t deny that it looks good, but all thoses color and graphical refinements make me a little bitter…
Three years during which I can choose every color but cannot choose the keyboard shortcuts that I use all along the days, a BIG button to view the color picker whereas we can always ask for a simple fxp Patch Save button, etc…
Frankly, sometimes I dream that Podium would be ugly ! (no offence !)

    Sorry, I must be tired…

I understand your point acousmod and I would guess that there is more than two or three Podium users who would have preferred something else instead at this time in 1.96.

In my case the automapping issue is still a severe problem for me. But I think it is still a good thing to be positive and give credit where it is due for clever ideas that make things easy and in this case also much more graphically appealing IMO.

But yes there are at least 3 items I would have liked to see before the colour picker….but that will not stop me from letting Frits know when I really like something even if I still have a far bigger issue in another area of Podium. So big that 90% of my Podium projects will only be finished once the automapping issue is addressed. Which could be months from now (early, mid or even late 2008). But it’s just too much manual work for me to bother with those projects. It’s actually easier to finsh the projects in another host. Much easier.

That is clearly not the message one would want a new user to read about Podium, but the automapping issue is just too wide a problem IMO.

But still it can only help to not only give feedback on problems with Podium but positve aspects of Podium as well. I think Frits is doing the best he can to satisfy all our requests while trying to maintain a consistent focus in one area to avoid getting sidetracked.

Also features can look easy to address based on functionality from our point of view but might take far longer to address from Frits point of view.

I guess I’m suggesting we cut him some slack here. I guess he can only do so much 🙂

Trying the new beta was very interesting…

But to cut it short, yes, everything concerning the inspector works better than anticipated.
Two things about the color picker:

1- Is there a reason that you have to choose a saturation value before picking the desired hue? Other than that the color would still be gray?
2- Maybe when a track is not color-enabled yet, there could be a button instead of the HSL bars (or they could be grayed-out, acting as a button) to enable it? If I didn’t overlook something, you still have to open the track properties dialog to do that, meaning more clicks.

    hi Frits
I loose the last element of the toolbar when the inspector is open, but I should probably use the money saved by not paying for Cubase updates and buy a bigger monitor, then it would not be an issue.

I came to the conclustion that the separate hue/saturation sliders do not work well precisely of the reason you mention here. So I’ve changed it to be a hue/saturation XY field instead of two sliders. Beta 2 is uploaded.

I’ve added “Enable Track Color” to the lane track menu. This will only appear if the track is not already color enabled.

now that i have had a chance to really look at the beta for the track inspector i am not sure i see exactly why the tab is better than an arrow?

another tab up top seems like more clutter than an arrrow to hide or open the track inspector. am i missing something?

fwiw i prefer to keep it like it is……or have an option.

Beta 3 is uploaded. This has a couple of design changes to the EXBSMR buttons. There are also a lot of bug fixes, as it turned out the previous betas did not always respond to key shortcuts and menu commands.

I hope you see that the inspector now uses the maximum available height of the window, instead of the limited space within the tracks region. This was a necessary design change, as the space requirements of the inspector has grown with new features being added over the years.

yes, i do see. but i used the view to keep the inspector managable. i prefer to hide things when i am not using them and i think the inspector was set up well for that. just my opinion.

    hi Sam
I too have been a bit dismayed by some of the changes to a UI i was very comfortable with.
I’ve been trying to get to like compact mode (too much horizontal confusion which can blur the distinction between tracks) with the possibility of losing expanded mode at some time.

I always seem to have empty space within the inspector so why does it need more screen? but if you open zReverb for example you can maybe see where Frits is coming from.

certainly these things get pretty subjective. personally, i think podium coud benefit more from other improvements.

frits has his plans and it is his design………..but, he is hoping to sell it to folks like us………..

    Beta 4 is up:

By request I’ve tried to swap the position of the input and track panels in the inspector. This means that the track panel is now at the top and F1 is used to open it instead of F5. Visually this makes more sense, since the panels are now placed in the same order as the controls in the group panel and the mixer. The only problem is that it becomes more difficult to open/close the panels by clicking the panel headers, because the clicked panel slides away from the mouse. Difficult to explain, but please try it and voice your opinion.
