The additional step you mention, is just holding down the control (or shift or alt) key. Is this really a burden?
In Podium you can reorder folders and place ordinary objects between folders etc. You can’t do that in Windows file explorer (at least in list or details view mode), so it can automatically assume that you intend to drop something in a folder when you place the mouse over it. In Podium you need to use a key to tell if you want to drop into the folder or place the object next to the folder.
🙂 I would not call it a burden…you did 😆
No really it’s not a burden. There are other things I would like addressed before this. It is not a major problem, just an additional step. A low priority in the Podium Universe.
I have not tried Firefox’s folder management but Acousmod’s description is exactly how IMO Podiums could be. Without the need for a modifier key. Podium is one step from that.
I can quite happily use it “as is” really Frits. Just expressing my opinon on it. I have a far more pressing issue (CPU Spikes) that I would very much like to bring to your attention. (Will start another thread).
conquistador, that was an outstandingly helpful post.
thank you!
Happy to help. 😉

Please let me know Frits, if there is a way to use a new folder in the devices menu created with the New Folder option I cannot find a way to do it without moving it to another new folder first.
You need to hold the control key to drop objects into a folder. The highlighting under the mouse should indicate this, by either a shaded line between objects (for placing objects between the two neighbouring objects under the cursor), or a fully drawn line over the folder with control key held.
Thanks for clarifying that. It of course does work 🙂 but it should IMO work like Windows does. Create a folder…it’s ready for use without an additional step.
The process you decribed is IMO a needless additional step. More complicated than the standard Windows folder creation and usage process, which is just one step.
A very good feature but…could be improved on. 😉

Certainly interesting and excellent value yes, however i’ve only tested Nebula2, and my pc struggles to do the math, to the extent that i’ve put it aside until next upgrade. Wondering if Nebula3 more efficient?
CPU usage is defintely the downside of Nebula and the price for such high quality, but Podium has an interesting way to get around it IMO. 😉
I have only tested Nebula 3 CM so CPU wise it might be better than Nebula 2.
Some CPU saving ideas in Podium…
1.Realtime bouncing.
Realtime bouncing to get around it I think it pretty much eliminates the CPU issue.
For instance you load up the 747 EQ it uses 20% of your CPU, solo the track you want to process before you add Nebula 3. Podium will to a degree if not completely disengage the CPU load from the muted tracks, this should free up the CPU for just that track IIRC.
Choose your Nebula FX, tweak to taste and bounce to another track in realtime. That way you can keep the *dry* original if you need to go back to it.
Now mute the track with Nebula on it to avoid hearing both tracks (dry and wet)…also do this to immeadiately bring the CPU load back down.
Just working this way one could even work with a 50% or more (extreme example) CPU load, per Nebula track just by making sure you solo the track for processing before you add Nebula.
2.Econo mode
Use the Econo mode (accessible in the KERN and PROG areas) when mixing with other active tracks. This uses about half the CPU of the normal mode. Simply solo the track when you are ready to bounce and then choose the Normal mode to bounce at the highest quality.
Also in the MAST section
(At the bottom of the interface there are)
PROG FAST KERN MAST MIDI DISK buttons click on MAST…from what I have read increasing the Quality setting gets even better quality bounces.
From their PDF…
“Quality
This is used by Nebula at rendering time, when the user exports audio tracks or bounces them. This
feature only works if the host program (VST Host) provides notification of its internal status
Increasing it Nebula will be more accurate. The actual program rate will be the result of the division
between PROG RATE and QUALITY. Rendering process will be slower.”
After you have done that mute that track to remove Nebula from CPU usage.
Slightly confusing….about suggestion 2…
I think if the Econo text is visible, CPU usage is higher (confusing I know) test it anyway so perhaps having the Normal text visible means the reverse.
It seems that way on my PC. Podium seems to have less of a load if the Normal text is visible. When Econo is visible CPU rises a bit. I guess the buttons should be reversed.
HTH.

An essential feature if you have a large collection of plugins.
My thoughts exactly. Highly useful for me.
could you possibly elaborate?
Since you asked 😉
An example…
“I want two of folders in Podium, one for my Class A plugs the other for Class B”
Ok…lets say you have a VST folder with all your FX in one place. Not categorised in anyway. You then use Podiums “Import Plugins from Folder” option.
What you will now see is all your plugs listed as they are on your hard drive. If they are not already categorised then this is where folders can really help.
So you want a Class A folder and a Class B folder for the FX plugs you have just imported. What you could do is…
1. Right click on any of the folders or plugs you have imported that you would consider class A (like Nebula 3) 🙂
2. Select the “Move to new folder” option.
3. Name the folder Class A
4. Click OK
Podium has just created a folder and inserted the selected plug into it. You can now drag other plugs you consider Class A into that folder. Drag and drop.
You can even Ctrl click on each folder or plug you want to place in a new folder and then right click and choose “Move to a new folder”. So it does not have to be a case of dragging them one by one.
Once you have finished dragging more Class A plugs to that folder, you can then repeat steps 1 – 4 for the Class B folder creation. Only this time of course at step 3, name the folder Class B instead of Class A.
That is a pretty basic example.
One could of course create folders that identify plugs by developer (Acustica Audio, Voxengo e.t.c), or by type…Compressor, EQ, Delay, Reverb, or by function or purpose (Mastering, Warmth, Analysis e.t.c) the possibilities are probably endless. It depends on your taste.
Of course nothing is stopping you from having this kind of layout on your hard drive already. So when Podium scans your VST drive it’s all there nicely categorised.
But… even if you pre categorised your plugs you could simply save that project as a template from within Podium. Then change the FX layout to another type, say a list of plugs by type instead of developer and save that as another project template.
Another example…you could even delete all your FX plugs apart from the Mastering FX folder…then save that as a Mastering Project template.
This would mean once you have finished a project (with the normal layout of FX by type for instance) you could then export your work and open up the Mastering project template with just your Mastering FX listed, all ready to go. No need to scroll through 20 – 50 or more plugs.
I am sure there are many other examples but this should hopefully provide some idea as to the highly useful nature of folders in the devices menu. 😉
@ Frits…
While the folder system is clearly very useful it is one step away from being as intuitive as Windows. I don’t know why I have not brought this up before…
a. When a folder is created in Windows you can immeadiately drag and drop anything into it.
b. If you however choose the “New Folder”option from Podiums Devices Menu it will correctly create a new folder but…you cannot drag anything into it. Try it and see.
This will and likely has led to a good deal of confusion for new users certainly for me in the past as well.
The only way to “activate” that folder is to right click on it and “Move to a new folder”! Now you can drag anything into it. So clearly a new folder in Podium that is empty cannot be used for anything. New folder yes, but not a New active folder.
If I am missing something please let me know Frits. 🙂
An additional step is required to “activate” the folder. Once you create this new folder there is nothing to let you know it cannot be used for anything…until you insert it into another folder which is completely baffling.
This would give the impression the feature does not work properly or is buggy. A quick way to lose a potential customer. In any case I think the New Folder… option is not quite complete IMO.
Please let me know Frits, if there is a way to use a new folder in the devices menu created with the New Folder option I cannot find a way to do it without moving it to another new folder first.
Thanks.

i have been using the free nebula and it is pretty cool!
I did some comparisons and I was amazed at the depth and clarity of one of the EQ’s on a drumloop. I have never heard any plug sound that good. Of course there are many more Hardware EQ’s, Compressors e.t.c in Nebula 3 that I have not even tried yet.
If you did not know already the 747 compressor in Nebula3, Nebula CM and maybe the free version, apparently and incredibly (you will see what I mean when you click on the link below) is sampled from this hardware FX!!!!!!!!! 😯
Scroll down for the 4 figure price!

No wonder so many people from what I have read like that compressor. 8)
It makes Nebula 3 truly astounding value for money. 🙂 It was a nonsense to expect that kind of quality for so little money just a year or two ago.
I also read that some of the Nebula FX are even hybrids of two hardware FX!!!
No idea where it is all going but the price will surely rise at some point. I currently use the CM version but I think at some point (before the price goes up) I will likely get the full version. 8)

Of course, ZGrid and Timestretch…
But I’ve written only here adjustements of existing features that will make life better for some of us, not the new ones that we are waiting for 😉
Ok, fair enough. 🙂
Yes, streaming of muted tracks will allow for unmuting without delay.
But a little delay when unmuting would be far more preferable in most cases than wasting hard disc bandwith with muted tracks.
A preference option would make everybody pleased
I like the current behaviour (if indeed it is critical for gapless playback)but I agree making it optional would probably be best. 😉

Simple sampler – loads single wav – with rudimentary filter/EG/LFO
While this comment by Klemperer is accurate “It’s just not difficult to find samplers, Paax3CM in the mag, Shortcircuit free, sfz, and so many more, all are pretty good.” I would still be very interested in a Zynewave sampler. Defintely. Something that can load mulitsamples not just one shots. 16,24 or 32 bit wave file support would be great.

I agree.
There was a similar ish thread not long ago here…
http://www.zynewave.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1346
I have just had a quick read through…
– Do not stream/process muted tracks and events
I was under the impression Podium did this already. Come to think of it I think Frits said something about it being necessary for gapless playback. Not sure though.
– Always show handles or not (current)
I assume you mean the clips here. That might be nice actually.
If there was one FR I would add from my (long list) it would be the almost mythical ZGrid. When Frits does get round to that, Podium will shift up a few more gears in a real hurry IMO.
I think it says a lot about the maturity of Podium as a Host that most of your requests are not major IMO. Might be a major effort for Frits to implement though (don’t know, maybe not) but they are what I would call nice refinements to what is already there, mostly anyway.

One very good solution is to use Vegas to play the video and to synchronize it with Podium with internal MTC.
Nice tip. 😉
It would be nice as well IMO, to have some sort of Video track in Podium at some stage. If only for a quick basic reference.

It’s on the list, but I’m currently focusing on developing the track management. Later on I’ll get back to working on events.
Question:
When you move an event away from another crossfaded event, I assume you want the fade in/out on both events to be reset? (not just the selected/moved event).
Just missed your post… 😛 I would say both files as neither of them would be crossfading anymore.
I pretty much agree with all of the suggestions in the first post. When you have time of course Frits 😉 but I think there is room to refine those features.
Heavy usage tends to make these things more of an issue. I can see where acousmod is coming from. 🙂
