Very informative thread on zReverb’s development.
Let me ask a slightly different question. If I look at the reverbs out there, options are all over the map, ranging from relatively cheap to convolution reverbs that claim to reproduce rooms exactly to the TC Electronic Reverb 4000 that comes in at about $3,000.
Where does zReverb fit in? Is it a pro quality reverb?
As a side question, is a convolution style reverb actually superior to a more traditional design? I have my doubts that it is.

Incidentally, I think zReverb is great, but my opinion on this probably isn’t worth the sentence I used up to write it. 🙂

Use your ears-if it sounds good on your tunes, use it! 🙂

Fritz, do a poll, the results may surprise you!

You know it’s kind of funny. The first DAW I really got into was Tracktion. Tracktion stepped beyond the concept of having to use an insert for effects. I bought in to it right away. After spending some time with Tracktion I took a look at some other products, Cubase, Cakewalk and even Reaper and their approach to handling effects just seems alien and archaic.

Why take a step backwards and implement a feature that really comes from a h/w historical perspective. The current implementation of Podium is so much more powerful than provided with these other DAW’s and I very much prefer Podium’s approach than Tracktion’s although when you get right down to it’s not really all that much different.

The addition of zMatrix will take this app to a completely new level I and I can’t wait.

A poll might be interesting but it might surprise you as well.

    Whatever. 🙄

    Hi Peter,

Currently I have no plans of supporting more than one plugin per track.

    Hi Frits,

Do you still really have “no plans” of supporting more than one plugin per track? I think it is a major feature. I like the current set up for instance as it has it’s strengths, (having FX on separate tracks) but it can all too easily become very tedious managing up to five times as many (or even more) tracks in Podium than a user would in just about any other host! 🙁

Have you really closed the door on this completely?

This is one of the key features I had been waiting for, since I bought Podium over a year ago. 🙁

Is there a way to load two instances of the same vsti?

Yes. If the plugin is imported as an insert mapping, you just drag the mapping to new tracks to create new instances. If the plugin is imported as a global plugin (mappings have (#1) in their name) then you need to create additional sets of mappings for each instance you want to use. Currently the easiest way to do this is to import the plugin again, which will create mappings with (#2) etc. in their name.

WAY too much trouble. I want to create music, not juggle software. By the time all that is set up, the musical inspiration is GONE. Not fun at all.

For now I’ll just use Phrazor or eXT until you do the below for the next release. MUCH easier and far less hassle.

For the next release I’m going to add a “Duplicate New Instance” context menu to the device list on the start page. This will make it easier to create additional instances of global plugins, mixer busses etc.

EDIT: I spoke too soon. 😳 I don’t know how or why it works, but if I go to the Input mapping panel and right click on Midi In, then choose ‘ Auto Assign to focus track’, I can play two different patches from the same vsti on two different tracks.

As well as different icons, different colours would make the category far more distinctive-like say green for midi, blue for audio.

The problem with using colors for the icons is that it will not necessarily look good with various color schemes. That’s why the icons are mostly in graytone and tinted to the current color scheme.

Could the colours be made changeable like other gui widgets are now?

I’m currently trying out various icons that will help distinguish the different types of device mappings. Previously all device mapping objects were shown with the same ‘roll of cables’ icon. Here’s the icons for audio outputs, audio inputs and MIDI inputs:

Let me know what you think about these, and also if you have any ideas for icons for the remaining device mapping types: Mixer bus, plugin effect, plugin instrument, hardware effect and hardware instrument.

As well as different icons, different colours would make the category far more distinctive-like say green for midi, blue for audio.

I’ve changed the scan & import function so that the actual plugin loading is done by the UI thread. This fixes the RealGuitar2 hang. I figured there may be other plugins that gets confused if they are not loaded from the UI thread. There was a recent report about a conflict between Cygnus and JCM900 which may be related. The downside is that the scanning is a tiny bit slower now and the progress dialog is a little less responsive to user input, but I think it is worth the sacrifice to get a more stable plugin load.

Rock solid is a GOOD THING!!! 8)

Thanks again for your attention to this issue. Will the fix be in the next update?

    Cheers

I have tried the RealGuitar2 demo, and I get the hanging too. I don’t think it has anything to do with the new project start page. I get hanging too when using the ‘quick setup’ or ‘scan & import’ commands in the project wizard. This also happens in release 1.65. I can use the ‘import plugin’ commands to import the RealGuitar2 plugin without problems. The problem only occurs with the scanning procedure. The difference is that the plugin scanning occurs in a background thread to allow the user to abort the scanning with the abort button in the progress dialog. This appears to cause problems with RealGuitar, as if it assumes that the plugin construction occurs in the UI thread. I’ll do some more testing.

Thanks for the follow up, Frits. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. 🙂

So THAT’s why you uploaded those graphics! 😛 😉

I have always had zero interest in Fruity Loops. YMMV.

You’ve got to admit they look pretty cool though 😉
