The fader requires more pixels than the width of the dB labels, even when the fader overlaps the labels. On top of that, one of my design criteria is that the level meters are centered on the strip, which results in some wasted space to the right of the meters.
that is why I suggested to put the fader in the middle of the two level indicators… 🙂 How about that?
Automation parameter tracks are wider than standard tracks anyway in the mixer.
That is right for non-audio tracks. But these won’t need faders anyway. Audio tracks are wider than parameter tracks, at least here.. The width of audio tracks depends on the number of audio channels. Take a 6 channel track and you have a very wide track.. 🙂

It’s a full 1.74 version without zReverb. It has the basic fade functionality but not the latest improvements (scalable waveform, crossfade etc.).
I assume the second workshop is in the mag. Could you give some details about what the topic is this time? The Beat editors have done this entirely on their own, so I have no idea what they are up to.
Of course: it is a 2 page workshop that covers 15 steps called “Audio-Recording & – Automation” (cool, it is the same in German as it is in English here 😉 )
1. add new track
2. track properties
3. assigning inputs
4. start recording
5. sound editor (and midi editor)
6. tools in sound editor (and midi editor)
7. edit menu in sound editor
8. Level and Pan
9. some words about the object oriented structure of Podium
10. level automation
11. plugin parameter automation
12. properties of parameters
13. device properties
14. VST parameter automation
15. automation in the mixer (faders)
The workshop is well done imo. It is better than most workshops in the BEAT. Most of them aren’t very useful when you own the product already. They are rather superficial.
I hope putting Podium in the Mag generates some sales for you, Frits! I realized that there are some more forum registrations in the last weeks. Perhaps as people play with the version in BEAT, they want “more” and buy the “full” license.

Just want to introduce myself a bit. Stumbled upon a post in a forum about podium. First I thought “Ok, just another sequencer …” but after buying a Beat magazine (I’m from germany) and fiddling around with Podium I fell in love with it. I bought a licence already.
The object orientated design is really a great concept for a sequencer and as a software developer I like it all the more. I was using Cubase for a long time and switched to Tracktion 2 + energyXT two years ago. But I think I found now exactly what I need.
At the moment I’m creating some device definitions for my hardware devices. Will add them to the Wiki when they are ready to use. A lot of to type but once finished a great time saver and a perfect integration of the hardware into the sequencer.
Ok, enough words for now, need to finish my device definitions. 😀
A little freebee from me:
If you need a solution to play some notes with your computer keyboard (on a laptop for example) without a midi controller keyboard, you can use my software TracktionKeys for this purpose.

Hi and welcome on board!! 🙂
I’m from Germany, too. I hope we’ll see some more german users here in the future.
🙁 hm… Ok..
Is it really that big deal to implement? I mean, I really want the features you’re adding right now, but there are numerous VSTi on my harddrive that make use of drag n drop, and many people use ezDrummer or Stylus RMX.. Even the fact that many BEAT users will have a further look on Podium.. Many of them are using loops, and thus use drag n drop a lot.
But timestretching is a VERY important feature for the future (esp. concerning loops) sales of Podium, so please take your time with it! Drag n Drop will have to wait then..
WOW! 🙂 Nice idea. Adding the “e” shortcut would have been my suggestion, but you got it first 😉
This looks like it will make working with Podium a lot easier.. And it contributes perfectly to Podium’s hierarchic structure. Again the routing can be seen in a clear way. I like it a lot!
hm, wouldn’t it be possible to put the faders right on top of the level indicators, thus avoiding having to make them wider?

I have thought about adding an “export” command to the file menu in the sound editor. This would then bring up a dialog where you can select the format of the file such as wav or mp3. For wav files there would be further options for setting bit depth and dither.
Yes please! 🙂
The options to select the format, bit depth and dither are essential features for exporting files and will further reduce the need to use other software packages for tasks of that nature.
I think adding the export command to the file menu and the sound editor is also a very good idea. I totally agree. 8)
+1000!
But nobody wants to collaborate with me anymore… Sad Sad
Do you know http://www.digitalmusician.net ? This is a very cool site. They offer a VST or RTAS Plugin that enables you to record the audio of somebody over your internet connection. You can get the plugin for free, but it is limited in quality to 128 kbit/sec… enough for demo purposes imo. For 10 Euros per month you get a pro sound quality. The site is also a platform for getting to know other musicians. I’ll try the plugin for myself.. I hope it’ll work with Podium..

i would like an ‘open in external audio editor’ button….. this would save you having to locate the file of the audio again in the external audio editor….
This is a very good idea!! Perhaps, this is easier to implement, Frits? I would like this option..
and I don’t see how your approach is any different then Tracktions’ approach. It uses LAME as well.
When you export to MP3 in Tracktion, there is only one file created for the export, a MP3 file. If you have the option in Podium’s sound editor, you would have bounced your master file before. Thus you have the original uncompressed sound file, and your MP3 file. That is different to Tracktion.
Controller Support is important, too! I agree here. Frits can’t implement everything at the same time, I know that. We’ll see..
The issue of 2/2007 is out. Podium is updated to 1.74
Very nice. Does this mean, it includes the fade properties, introduced in 1.73? That would be a very nice addition for german users 🙂
Just a little reminder.. 😉 although it is Midi-related! 😆
But with the way I described, you’ll still have your wave file. That is different to Tracktion’s approach.
I don’t know, why it should be bad to safe some time here.. It is much more clicks to open a dedicated MP3-converting-tool. And most hosts I tested have this: Cubase, Nuendo, Tracktion, Reaper, Samplitude, Magix Music Studio, Sonar…
I don’t know why somebody can be against this feature..
Thank you! 😀
I like the sax… Is it looped as well?
Yes, I took it from the Magix Loops Library.. There are several phrases that I put together for the solo in this song.
What kind of video is this for?
Oh, that’s just a short video-slideshow I gave one of my relatives.. Nothing of importance.. The drums sound so realistic imo. Toontrack did a very good job there!
